Duration: 12 months

  • Onsite days:
    Tuesdays and Wednesdays
  • Remote eligible days:
    Mondays, Thursdays, Fridays
  • Must be local in the Lansing, Michigan area (within 90 miles)
Required Qualifications
  • 3–5 years of experience in user interface (UI) design
  • 3–5 years of experience conducting user research
  • Degree or certification in Graphic Design, Interaction Design, User Interface Design, or a related field
  • Portfolio submission required to demonstrate design skills and project experience
  • 2–3 professional references required
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience designing in alignment with established design standards
  • Knowledge of WCAG guidelines and experience designing for accessibility
  • Experience conducting usability testing
  • Experience performing accessibility (ADA) testing
Responsibilities
  • Understand project scope and collaborate with the team to ensure clear requirements, functionality, scalability, and usability of the IT solution.
  • Adhere to the project schedule while working with the Business Analyst to examine existing business processes and systems to develop a full representation of interface design and usability.
  • Work with User Acceptance Test (UAT) testers and conduct usability testing to ensure compliance with UI/UX best practices.
  • Appropriately resolve critical IT issues related to the UI/UX role.
  • Participate in all requirement gathering meetings and brainstorm sessions with business owners to identify product usability concerns and desires.
  • Conduct user interviews, research, observations, and testing as needed, and develop personas, user flows/journey maps, and storyboards.
  • Facilitate regular design meetings during application development.
  • Examine and analyze current user flows and processes, identify pain points, and deliver solutions from a usability and visual standpoint.
  • Lead overall visual design, usability, and accessibility of the product.
  • Advocate for the end user and continually work to improve overall design and usability.
  • Create sketches, wireframes, and mockups of user interface screens according to user stories, State of Michigan (SOM) applications and site standards, and ADA requirements.
  • Create high‑fidelity functioning prototypes when applicable.
  • Review wireframes with the Business Analyst and Technical Lead before presenting to business.
  • Provide resources (checklists and toolsets) to assist the development team with UI/UX best practices, coding standards, and ADA vulnerability remediation.
  • Ensure conformance to SOM applications and site standards.
  • Perform accessibility testing to meet ADA requirements.
  • Create and facilitate usability tests with intended users and iterate designs accordingly.
  • Advise developers on accessibility requirements and vulnerability remediation.
  • Serve as liaison to the DTMB Center for Shared Solutions (CSS) eMichigan team.
