Job Description
The GIS Student Assistant is charged with assisting Energy Security section staff in the expansion and development of Geographic Information System (GIS) resources for the Michigan Public Service Commission (MPSC). The assistant will conduct spatial exploration and create maps and data sets for research projects related to customer outages, energy generation and distribution, critical energy infrastructure, distributed energy, natural gas inspections, and investigations.
The work also includes compiling and cleaning existing or new data sets, producing summaries in tables, charts, or other visual representations for reports, presentations, briefing memos, or public online posting. The role requires developing and demonstrating proficiency in the essential duties outlined below.
- Assist staff with GIS resource expansion and development.
- Conduct spatial exploration and create maps and data sets for research projects.
- Compile and clean existing or new data sets from spatial and non-spatial perspectives.
- Summarize data in tables, charts, or other visual representations for reports, presentations, briefing memos, or online publication.
Education and Experience
- Current enrollment in high school, vocational or technical school, or post‑secondary educational institution.
- No specific type or amount of experience is required.
Submit proof of enrollment that includes unofficial transcripts, an acceptance letter for the upcoming semester/term, a current semester/term schedule, or a tuition payment receipt showing a $0.00 balance. Documents must include the student’s name, institution name, list of current courses/credits, and if applicable courses/credits completed. Failure to attach proof of enrollment may result in screening out of the process.
