Under the direct supervision of Field Services Command Staff, Court Security Deputies are assigned to the Field Services Division of the Ingham County Sheriff’s Office. The position is an MCOLES certified deputy assigned to provide safety, security and police services at Veteran’s Memorial courthouse (VMC)/ Grady Porter Building (GPB) for all inmates, visitors, and staff.
Essential Functions- Monitor inmates and in‑custody juveniles and bring them to the courtroom for their hearing/trial.
- Monitor courtrooms when needed to maintain decorum.
- Take remands and warrant arrests into custody.
- Monitor lobby.
- Handle any criminal complaints that occur within the sidewalks surrounding VMC/GPB.
- Assist MDOC/ other agencies when they transport persons to VMC for court.
- Manage conflict and disruptive persons who have business at VMC, to include FOC or the clerk’s office.
- Assist juvenile officers and probation officers.
- Performs other duties as assigned.

Employment QualificationsEducation: High school graduate or equivalent required. College training in Law Enforcement or Criminal Justice preferred. Must be MCOLES certified.
Experience: Prior Law Enforcement experience preferred.
Other Requirements- Weight must be in proportion to height as determined by physical examination.
- Uncorrected vision correctable to 20/20 vision in each eye by soft contact lenses, gas permeable lenses and/or extended wear lenses. No greater than 20/40 vision in each eye correctable to 20/20 with glasses. Must not be color blind.
- Must have no prior felony convictions (includes expunged convictions).
- Must possess and maintain a valid Michigan driver's license.
- Must be at least 21 years of age.
Position is part time maximum of 1040 hours per year or 20 hours per week.
Demonstrates effective communication skills by engaging, interacting and working with all individuals to ensure clarity and understanding in all interactions.

Physical Requirements /Working Conditions- Must be capable of affecting an arrest, forcibly if necessary, using handcuffs and other restraints.
- Must be able to climb over obstacles; climb through openings; jump down from elevated surfaces; jump over obstacles, ditches and streams; and crawl in confined areas to facilitate pursuit, search, investigate and/or rescue which may also involve standing or sitting for long periods of time.
- Requires the ability to communicate verbally and effectively by listening to people and by giving information, directions, and commands in person and over law enforcement radio channels. Initiates and responds to radio communications, often under adverse conditions such as siren usage and high speed vehicle operations.
- Must be capable of performing tasks which require lifting, carrying, or dragging people or heavy objects while performing arrest, rescue or general patrol functions.
- This position requires the ability to communicate and respond to inquiries both in person and over the phone.
- This position requires the ability to operate a PC/laptop and to enter & retrieve information from a computer.
- This position requires the ability to handle varying and often high levels of stress.
