Job OverviewA law firm seeks a senior attorney with over 10 years of experience to join its regulatory practice in Lansing, Michigan. The ideal candidate will have extensive experience in state energy regulation, including utility and regulatory commission matters, and will be adept at leading complex proceedings and advising clients on high-stakes regulatory issues.

Duties
  • Represent utilities, energy companies, and other regulated entities before the Michigan Public Service Commission and other state regulatory agencies.
  • Lead regulatory matters such as rate cases, cost recovery filings, tariff filings and amendments, rider proceedings, and integrated resource plans.
  • Advise clients on regulatory compliance, transaction approvals, cost allocation issues, and related regulatory strategy.
  • Draft and manage regulatory filings, including petitions, applications, comments, testimony, briefs, discovery, and responses to discovery.
  • Conduct and participate in hearings, including examination and cross-examination of witnesses.
  • Participate in settlement conferences and negotiate complex, multi-party regulatory settlements.
Requirements
  • 10 or more years of experience in energy, utility, and/or environmental regulatory law.
  • Substantial experience appearing before state public utility commissions, particularly the Michigan Public Service Commission.
  • Experience with rate cases, cost recovery, tariffs, resource planning, or related utility regulatory matters.
  • Familiarity with FERC proceedings is a plus but not required.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage complex regulatory proceedings with minimal oversight.
  • Strong writing, advocacy, and client-counseling skills.
  • Admission to practice in Michigan, or eligibility for prompt admission.
  • Must be based in Michigan.
Education

Juris Doctor (JD) degree.

Certifications

Licensed to practice law in Michigan.
