Preconstruction Manager – Michigan Regional Offices

The Christman Company is a national general contractor looking for a Preconstruction Manager in its Michigan regional offices (Grand Rapids, Lansing, or Detroit).

Responsibilities

As a Preconstruction Manager, you will work closely with the Vice President of Preconstruction to assist in managing the regional preconstruction department. You will allocate resources, develop project strategies, and maintain a high‑performance team. The role focuses on leading specific project assignments, building long‑term relationships with stakeholders, and ensuring successful outcomes and client satisfaction.

  • Providing preconstruction deliverables to clients.
  • Developing strategy for each assigned project.
  • Supporting business sales, team sales, and presentations.
  • Risk management – ensuring sound financial deals.
  • Driving cost leadership.
  • Overseeing and preparing estimates for projects at all stages.
  • Ensuring accuracy of estimates produced.
  • Maintaining an up‑to‑date costing database with current labor and material rates.
  • Managing the value‑added process for each project.
  • Leading preparation of guaranteed maximum prices and closing the GMP.
  • Directing, reviewing, approving the work of Estimating Engineers, Conceptual Estimators, and Senior Estimators.
  • Driving deadlines and achieving results.
  • Ensuring client satisfaction during preconstruction.
  • Attending sales presentations and marketing work to existing clients.
  • Enforcing and supporting project planning, logistics, and scheduling with other teams.
  • Ensuring involvement of subcontractors for pricing.
  • Supporting the operations team during subcontractor negotiations.
  • Continuously developing staff through mentoring, leading, motivating, and coaching (e.g., ethics, diversity, quality, development, safety).
  • Managing successful client relationships.
Qualifications

Required

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Construction Management, Civil Engineering, Engineering, Business, Finance, or a related field.
  • Ten (10) or more years of experience in construction or a related field.
  • Or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.

Additional Eligibility Requirements:

  • Strong analytical and organizational skills; ability to delegate tasks, motivate colleagues, and manage stakeholder priorities in a deadline‑oriented environment.
  • Recognizes problems or situations without precedent; evaluates alternatives and finds solutions through a systematic multi‑step approach.
  • Creates a sense of belonging and ownership among team members; assembles teams with the right mix of skills; coaches and motivates; delegates responsibility; promotes mutual support.
  • Ability to make decisions while analyzing risks and future impacts; understands when to make a choice and when to elevate issues.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Strong computer knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook.
