Nurse Extern - Nursing Support - PRN - Rotating
GENERAL SUMMARY
- Under the direction and supervision of the responsible Registered Nurse, performs specific patient care duties to meet safety and comfort needs of the patient using the nursing process.
- Provides input to assist the RN in planning and implementing patient care.
- Responds to emergent situations according to established procedures.
- Recognizes and participates in own continuing education.
REQUIREMENTS/LICENSURE/ CERTIFICATION
REQUIRED:
- High school diploma or G.E.D. equivalent.
- Enrolled in an accredited school of nursing.
- The completion of two clinical rotations, MUST be Med/Surg 1 and Med Surg 2 (in an acute care setting). Fundamentals being included in these (check with your clinical instructor if unsure).

To Remain Active in the Nurse Extern Role, You Must:
- Actively be enrolled in a nursing program
- Successfully complete each course
- Provide transcripts to Nurse Manager after each course
- Provide a copy of your plan of work to your Nurse Manager
If at any point the extern does not meet their academic institution’s standard for continued enrollment in the school of nursing classes, their employment as an extern will be rescinded.
- Physical ability to lift and move patients, supplies, and equipment with appropriate technique/device.
- Successful completion of 180-day introductory period required to achieve knowledge of policies relative to job duties and patient care unit.
PREFERENCES:
- Graduation from a nursing school within 12-18 months in good standing.
- Minimum 2 - 8–12-hour shifts per pay period, no holidays.
