MDOC-Registered Nurse P11-12-Southern Correctional Facilities

Registered Nurse positions are available in the Southern Region of the Michigan Department of Corrections. The role involves providing nursing care in inpatient, outpatient, or residential treatment programs within correctional facilities or for the Corrections Mental Health Program. RNs may be hired for specific areas and may be assigned to ambulatory or inpatient settings as needed.

The senior Registered Nurse (P12) will serve as a member of the interdisciplinary health‑care team and provide direct patient care independently on all hospital units. Duties include initiating and sustaining life‑saving care, performing full clinical nursing duties, exercising independent judgment in complex clinical situations, and acting as a charge nurse when necessary. The RN will also assess and treat correctional prisoners in various settings, determine referrals, and maintain independent clinical decision‑making in ambulatory and inpatient environments.

• Registered Nurse P11 – No specific type or amount of experience required; possession of a nursing diploma, associate’s, bachelor’s, or master’s degree licensed by the Michigan Board of Nursing.
• Registered Nurse P12 – One year of RN experience or a master’s degree in nursing, or a bachelor’s degree with six months of RN experience. Alternate education and experience may be substituted.

New hires for RN positions receive a $5,000 one‑time signing bonus, paid as $1,500 at first pay and the remaining $3,500 after completing one year of satisfactory service. Early departure within one year requires repayment of the entire bonus.

Applicants who have been convicted of a felony or misdemeanor are ineligible for employment until the completion of any sentence, including parole or probation. Employment in the state requires a high degree of loyalty and ethical standards; employees must report any conflict of interest. (
