Job Overview
Registered Nurse positions offer varied responsibilities across inpatient, outpatient, and residential treatment programs within correctional facilities and the Corrections Mental Health Program. Registered Nurses (RNs) may be assigned to specific areas or to all ambulatory or inpatient settings within a complex or facility.
Key Responsibilities- Ambulatory Care in Prison Facilities – senior RNs make independent clinical decisions and evaluate patients, determining referrals to physician or other providers.
- Emergency clinic nurse, inpatient staff nurse, mental health nurse, or ambulatory clinic nurse roles, performing full-range clinical duties in housing units, camps, transport vehicles, ambulances, etc.
- Initiate and sustain life‑saving care, exercising independent judgment beyond written procedures.
- Education:
- Possession of a diploma, associate’s, bachelor’s, or master’s degree in nursing accepted for licensure by the Michigan Board of Nursing.
- Experience:
- Registered Nurse P11 – no specific experience required.
- Registered Nurse 12 – one year of experience equivalent to a Registered Nurse P11, or a bachelor’s degree with six months of experience, or a master’s degree.
- Competitive salaries with possible shift differential pay and/or prison pay of $0.40 to $0.50 per hour.
- Potential $5,000 signing payment for some facilities.
- Deferred compensation plans 457 and 401(k) with employer match up to 7%.
- Health, dental, vision, and life insurance; long‑term disability and care; flexible spending accounts.
- Twelve paid holidays and day off for major elections.
- Paid parental leave up to 12 weeks.
- New hires receive a one‑time signing bonus of $5,000 ($1,500 as a first pay adjustment and $3,500 after completing one year of service; the bonus is repayable if the employee leaves within one year).

Applicants must comply with state ethical standards and may be required to report conflicts of interest. Background screening follows Public Act 191 of 2017. New employees and those returning after more than two years will complete Non‑Custody New Employee Training (NCNET) – 40 or 80 hours of in‑person training – plus additional online training.
