Position Summary
Registered Nurse in the Southern Region of the Michigan Department of Corrections (MDOC). The role may involve shift differential pay, signing bonus, and a variety of benefits as outlined below.
Responsibilities- Provide direct patient care independently on all units of the hospital or assigned setting.
- Initiate and sustain life‑saving care and measures as appropriate.
- Serve as Charge Nurse in the absence of higher‑level managers.
- Perform full range of clinical nursing duties across inpatient, outpatient, ambulatory, and emergency settings.
- Maintain patient contact with security levels ranging from minimum to maximum.
- Screen for random drug and alcohol testing.
- Registered Nurse license in good standing with the Michigan Board of Nursing.
- Experience:
P11 – no specific experience required. - Experience:
P12 – one year of RN experience or a bachelor’s with six months of experience; alternatively a master’s degree in nursing. - Education:
diploma, associate’s, bachelor’s, or master’s degree in nursing. - Must be willing to comply with screening for felony/misdemeanor convictions.
- Competitive hourly wage (base pay plus shift differential and prison pay of $0.40–$0.50 per hour where applicable).
- One‑time signing bonus of $5,000: $1,500 paid in the first paycheck, remainder upon completion of one year of satisfactory service.
- Annual vacation, sick leave, and school & community leave.
- Health, dental, vision, and life insurance plus long‑term disability and long‑term care.
- Deferred compensation plans: 457 and 401(k) with employer match up to 7 %.
- Twelve paid holidays and day‑off for major elections.
- Paid parental leave up to 12 weeks following birth or adoption.
The MDOC may screen out applicants with a felony conviction in accordance with Public Act 191 of 2017. Applicants who have been convicted of a misdemeanor or felony are ineligible until satisfactory completion of any sentence, including parole or probation. All employees must adhere to high ethical standards and report conflicts of interest. Employees may be required to complete Non‑Custody New Employee Training (NCNET) and additional online training.
