Licensed Practical Nurse

The Licensed Practical Nurse is a direct caregiver who has the knowledge and skills necessary for concentrated effort and self-direction in carrying out the most complex nursing care assignments and who completes duties and responsibilities which involve performing nonstandard and specialized practical nursing activities requiring demonstrated skill sufficient to resolve a range of nursing problems. Work is reviewed daily by the RN;

however, the LPN works independently at this level and requires little supervision by the RN. Duties include but are not limited to:

• Demonstrates independent technical judgment, without the need for readily available supervision of their work.
• Possesses a detailed working knowledge of complex practical nursing skills and procedures.
• Functions as a leader or co-leader for a specifically identified group of patients. Functions as Charge Nurse, where appropriate.
• Serves as a member of the healthcare team by participating in planning, implementation and evaluation of nursing care using a focused assessment.
• Functions as preceptor when appropriate.
• Administers medications via all routes, excluding intravenous.
• Educates patients and/or family for understanding of orders as documented in CPRS and carries out complex treatments as ordered, monitors patients' response to medication and treatments.
• Reports changes to providers and RNs and documents effectiveness.
