GENERAL SUMMARY
The purpose of these positions is to provide medical and nursing services to people who are resident within the Kalamazoo County Jail, a 24 hour, physically secured criminal justice facility. Nursing care is delivered using the established nursing process, including assessment, planning, intervention, implementation, and evaluation, of applicable state jail standards, and all relevant laws, regulations, and under the direction of the Sheriff’s Office contracted physician.
This position collaborates with interdisciplinary partners, including mental health providers, contracted physicians, local hospitals, and pharmacies, to ensure continuity of care, maintain security and safety standards, and deliver effective, patient-centered treatment in accordance with accepted best practices..
- Assesses, evaluates, and treats medical concerns/conditions.
- Administers medications on a regular basis.
- Evaluates newly arrested people including assessing, vital signs, injuries, intoxication, and/or any other health concerns.
- Conducts physicals as required by the Michigan Department of Corrections (MDOC).
- Maintains medical inventory and supplies; manages and secures jail resident medications, including distribution schedules, documentation; and monitoring of patients' responses to medication. Collaborates with contracted medical providers, local pharmacies, and mental health providers.
- Assists in creating and updating agency protocols, and policies as they relate to medical needs.
- Performs related work as assigned.
Nurse I Required
Education and Experience
- Associate's degree from an accredited college or university in nursing
- One to three (1 to
3) years of related work experience in nursing
- Registered Nurse in the State of Michigan
Nurse II Required
Education and Experience
- Bachelor of Science in nursing (BSN) from an accredited college or university
- Three to Five (3 to
5) years of work experience in nursing
- Registered Nurse in the State of Michigan
