Position: Agricultural Technician I

Overview

$18.30 - $21.87 per Hour. New to State candidates will be hired into the minimum salary of the classification or minimum of alternate range when applicable.

Responsibilities
  • Under supervision of the Agricultural Pest Control Supervisor, and under the lead of the Agricultural Pest Control Specialist, perform duties of average difficulty regarding the survey and treatment of hydrilla and other noxious aquatic weeds.
  • Conduct surveys for noxious weeds in Lake County.
  • Requires use of sampling equipment such as grappling hooks.
  • Operate vehicles for survey projects.
  • Assist in planning surveys and collecting water samples.
  • Collect suspected specimens and map infestations.

Working Conditions

The duties of this position primarily occur outdoors, approximately 85% of the time. Travel to remote and/or populated areas within California via State government assigned truck. In the field, the incumbent works with Agricultural Pest Control Specialist and/or a group of seasonal employees. The incumbent may work with varied vehicles and equipment, including airboats, kayaks, grappling hooks, and pumps of various kinds.

Activities may require driving for several hours, lifting objects, and moving equipment of various weights. Incumbent may encounter extremes in temperature, humidity, variable terrain, and aquatic or riparian situations. Incumbent is required to enter or swim in bodies of water that vary in temperature, length, width, and depth. Occasional long travel on short notice may be required, including full days or several nights.

The remaining workload may be in permanent buildings or trailers leased or owned by the state or cooperating agencies or other locations. The setting includes standard office equipment and software such as MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access, and Publisher, as well as other databases/software used for research tasks.

Occasional telework may occur under unavoidable circumstances as part of the incumbent’s ongoing regular schedule in accordance with CDFA’s Telework Policy.

The primary responsibilities of the Integrated Pest Control Branch (IPCB) are the detection and control or eradication of exotic and invasive pests that threaten California’s agricultural and natural resources. Programs include Cotton Pest Control, Cotton Seed Bug, Silverleaf Whitefly Monitoring, Beet Curly Top Virus, Broomrape, Navel Orangeworm, Hydrilla Eradication, Vertebrate Pest Control Research, Pink Hibiscus Mealybug, Terrestrial & Aquatic Weed Grant and County Weed, Statewide Weed Management Areas, Biological Control, Apiary Protection, Bee Brand, and County Beekeeper Registration Programs.

  • The position(s) require a valid California Driver’s License (CDL). Provide CDL number, class, expiration date, endorsements/restrictions on your application.
  • Must be able to conduct aquatic surveys from boats and kayaks in lakes, canals, and waterways with navigation skills and safety in case of capsizing.
  • Must possess a safe driving record.
  • Must have a valid driver’s license.
  • Completion of one semester of college courses in agricultural subjects or one season of agricultural related experience.
