Position: Tree Trimmer I

Job Responsibilities

Utilizes chain saws, hand saws, pole pruners, climbing gear, and trucks with hydraulic extensions to trim excess or dead branches from trees.

Removes dead or diseased trees.

Plants and maintains trees according to specifications.

Ensures safe working conditions by routine gear inspections, wearing proper PPE, maintaining safe work zones, and protecting assets both public and private.

Operates specialized power equipment including chippers, stump grinders, tree spades, Bucket trucks, and loaders.

Utilizes tablets and technology to maintain the digital inventory of the city’s urban forest, create work orders necessary for the optimal health of the urban forest.

Plants and maintains tulip beds according to specifications.

Assists in storm clean-up activities by removing damaged limbs or fallen trees.

Performs a variety of general maintenance chores including but not limited to setting up tents, hanging banners, and mowing grass.

Snow removal activities during the winter months, which include operation of sidewalk plows, pickup trucks with plows, and other snow removal equipment.

Qualifications

Knowledge normally acquired through the completion of high school, with additional specialized training in Horticulture, Forestry, or a related field.
CDL Class B Certification, Electrical Hazard Awareness Certification, and HiLo License required.
One to two years experience in forestry maintenance activities, including knowledge of industrial safety standards for logging and tree trimming.
Interpersonal skills necessary to manage the activities of a small, diverse group of employees and work productively with all levels of City personnel and the general public.
Mental ability to frequently handle pressures related to fulfilling schedule requirements and dealing with the concerns of citizens and employees.
Physical ability to frequently lift/push/pull/transport equipment and materials weighing up to 100 pounds. Ability to frequently climb/bend/stoop/crawl to accommodate different working positions.

Working Conditions

Work includes outside conditions with frequent exposure to extreme hot or cold weather conditions.
Work includes periodic exposure to fumes, odors, dust, dirt, noise, moving objects, and hazardous materials.
Work includes frequent exposure to environmental hazards associated with electrical, mechanical and/or power equipment.
