- Evaluate and examine forensic evidence, primarily in the area of fingerprint evidence, in connection with criminal cases.
- Collect latent fingerprints by lifting, casting, or photography, compare to known standards, and identify unknown deceased persons.
- Apply a variety of processing techniques and forensic light sources to develop latent fingerprints on submitted evidence.
- Testify in court, conduct crime‑scene investigations, and support validation of new methods, equipment and instruments.
- Receive direct training by a senior‑level scientist or manager until fully competent and perform all duties in a bias‑free manner.
Possession of a bachelor’s degree in forensic science, natural science, or a related pure or applied science.
Experience- Forensic Scientist 9: No specific type or amount of experience required.
- Forensic Scientist 10: One year of professional experience in a crime laboratory carrying out tests, analyses, production, or research involving chemical, biochemical, biological, or physical evidence.
- Forensic Scientist P11: Two years of professional experience in a crime laboratory, including one year equivalent to a Forensic Scientist 10.
Applicants must hold a bachelor’s degree with a major in natural science, criminal justice, forensic science, or a related field and have at least 8 semester credits in chemistry. Those missing the chemistry credits may be appointed provided they complete the required credits by the end of the second year; failure to do so may result in separation from the program.
RequiredSkills & Competencies
- Experience as a latent print examiner.
- Knowledge of forensic latent print laboratory instrumentation.
- Court testimony experience.
- Experience with forensic laboratory evidence handling procedures.
Selected candidates must submit a DNA sample for inclusion into the DNA Quality Index. New hires will be assigned to a specific laboratory and may require frequent travel for training; lodging and per diem will be provided as needed.
