Position Description
As an armed and uniformed civilian member of the Michigan State Police, the State Properties Security Officer’s (SPSO) mission is to ensure the safety and well‑being of visitors, employees, and the public within state‑owned buildings and properties. The SPSO is authorized to exercise arrest powers on state properties while on duty and in uniform. The role requires conducting routine patrols, monitoring security systems, and promptly responding to any incidents or security breaches while upholding a proud tradition of service through excellence, integrity, and courtesy.
Responsibilities- Patrol state‑owned facilities and property.
- Monitor security systems and report any breaches.
- Respond to incidents and exercise arrest powers as authorized.
- Maintain a visible law‑enforcement presence to deter crime and ensure safety.
Educational level: completion of high school.
- State Properties Security Officer 7:
No specific type or amount of experience required. - State Properties Security Officer 8:
One year of experience equivalent to a State Properties Security Officer, or one year as a law‑enforcement officer and current MCOLES certification may be substituted. - State Properties Security Officer 9:
Two years of experience equivalent to a State Properties Security Officer, including one year equivalent to a State Properties Security Officer 8; or two years as a law‑enforcement officer and current MCOLES certification may be substituted.
- Test‑designated and subject to pre‑appointment, random‑selection, and post‑accident drug and alcohol testing.
- No criminal record of felony convictions that would prohibit the applicant from receiving, possessing, or carrying a firearm.
- Possession of a valid driver’s license and the ability to obtain a valid Michigan driver’s license.
- Willingness to submit to a thorough background investigation.
- Must be at least 18 years of age.
- Pre‑employment screening, including drug screen, criminal history background check, and fingerprint check by Michigan State Police.
