Overview
The Operations and Maintenance Division within the Public Service Department is seeking skilled Maintenance Workers to perform maintenance safely and properly for city streets and roadways. You will work outdoors with a dynamic crew on pavement, concrete, and other road projects.
Responsibilities- Work on a paving crew to place non‑compacted asphalt and racking material with a lute.
- Grade sub‑base for pavement, sidewalks, curbs, gutters, and set concrete forms.
- Visually check form work for line and grade compliance.
- Place and finish concrete with rakes, shovels, derbies, come‑along, and other tools.
- Drive trucks, operate snow plows, road salting equipment, and other heavy equipment.
- Operate heavy power‑assisting tools and drive dump trucks and related vehicles.
- Operate bobcats, forklifts, and serve as a crew person on an asphalt paving machine.
- Perform landscaping operations such as lawn and parkway restoration after construction.
- Conduct safety checks and minor repair and maintenance on vehicles and equipment.
- Perform street repairs using concrete, asphalt, sealant, and pavement preservation materials.
- Set up traffic control devices, including cones and barricades.
- High School Diploma or GED.
- One year of experience performing asphalt work, sewer maintenance work, or road and street maintenance work.
- Valid Michigan Group B Commercial Driver’s License with Air Brakes and N (tank) endorsements. Group A license must be obtained within 120 days of employment.
- Able to pass a physical examination required for operating vehicles over 10,000 pounds.
- Complete and pass the Solid Waste Training Program within 45 days.
- Complete MDOT Drug & Alcohol Training as part of the program.
- Complete and maintain Traffic Regulator Training and Certification bi‑annually.
- Complete and maintain Power and Industrial Truck Training and Certification every three years.
- Availability for overtime or shift work for snow and ice control or emergencies.
