Utility Worker

General Statement of Duties:
Employees in this classification perform a variety of semi-skilled operations involving physical exertion, operation of machinery, equipment maintenance and repair, and quality control.

Supervision Received

Work is performed within established departmental guidelines under the supervision of the Department Head, Foreman, or an Employee of a higher grade who assigns work and checks for proper performance of duties.

Supervision Exercised

May act as lead man in a small work crew.

Examples of Duties

Maintains and repairs water and sewer mains and related appurtenances.

Installs new water service lines; inspects new construction; may on occasion confer with contractors relevant to installations and inspections of service lines, mains etc.

Install, repairs, test, and read water meters.

Operate machinery such as backhoes, trucks, sewer cleaners and a variety of power hand tools. Plow snow and harvest seaweed.

Lift and move a variety of objects, including furniture, sandbags, snow, pipes, and equipment.

Perform landscaping duties as required. Set up parks for summer and close them for winter.

Participate in emergency standby.

Investigate complaints and recommend remedial action.

Review plans and specifications for new construction; provide as-built dimensions.

Enter confined spaces as required in accordance with applicable MIOSHA standards.

Physically operate, maintain, and repair pump stations.

Discharges other related duties within the Employee’s Department, as assigned:

(a) which member(s) of the classification have performed in the past, or
(b) which are required to meet emergencies, or
(c) which are required to provide necessary services when other Employees are absent or not available, or
(d) which involve the use of new equipment, procedures or techniques in the performance of such duties.

Minimum Entrance Requirements

Familiarity with the materials, methods, and practices of water and sewer system installation and maintenance. Ability to carry out oral and written instructions and to work from drawings. Skill in the use of tools and equipment common to water & sewer systems construction, maintenance, and service. Mechanical aptitude.

Qualifications:

Preferred possession of a valid driver’s license with a Class B or A CDL endorsement. Preferred possession of a valid Michigan EGLE Waterworks System Operator Classification S-4 certificate.
