Road Maintenance Operator (Job Classification 3 or 3B)
Road Commission of Kalamazoo County (RCKC) is seeking qualified applicants for the position of Road Maintenance Operator.
Location: Kalamazoo, MI
Hourly Rate: $27.98–$28.49 (Non-Exempt)

Regular:
Monday to Friday, 7:30 AM to 4:00 PM (potential overtime). Summer:
Monday to Thursday, 6:30 AM to 5:00 PM (subject to change). All shifts may vary and may require 24‑hr call backs for emergencies or weather.
- Manual labor including digging ditches, pothole repairs, guardrail and culvert repair and installation, tree trimming, brush control, hauling materials, and winter maintenance.
- Operate trucks and trailers, including heavy‑duty trucks equipped with snowplows, underbody blades, and spreaders for ice and snow removal.
- Load and unload tools, equipment, and materials, following Michigan Department of Transportation regulations and company protocols.
- Track and record materials, supplies, time, and equipment for each work project.
- Perform traffic regulation duties in accordance with the Michigan Manual of Uniform Traffic Devices.
- Complete Daily Vehicle Condition Report (VCR) detailing vehicle condition and promptly report any issues.
- Maintain and clean assigned vehicle or equipment.
- Adhere to RCKC Safety Manual and all applicable safety regulations.
- Operate and maintain additional equipment such as measuring instruments, hand tools, and vehicle‑automation devices.
- Assist in emergency situations and respond to call‑backs as required.
- Participate in training sessions and attend meetings.
- Maintain a positive attitude and foster public relations.
- High school diploma or GED.
- Valid Michigan driver license.
- One year of experience in construction or related field, truck driving, equipment operation, and customer service.
- Ability to obtain a Commercial Driver License (CDL) Group A with air brake endorsement; additional endorsements may be required.
- Strong organizational, planning, and communication skills.
- FLSA Status:
Non‑Exempt.
- Walk over uneven terrain, climb stairs and ladders, and perform inspections in crouch or kneel positions.
- Lifting up to 100 pounds for equipment parts or supplies.
- Travel to multiple locations for project review or meetings.
- Operate equipment and heavy trucks safely.
- Use hand tools and measure instruments as needed.
- Work indoors and outdoors on construction sites.
- Exposure to asphalt fumes, traffic, loud noises, extreme weather, and various construction site environments.
