CLASSACDLDRIVER
The Class AC CDL Driver is responsible for the safe and efficient transportation of equipment, materials, and construction-related assets to and from project sites. This position requires the operation of tractor-trailers, lowboy trailers, and train combinations while maintaining strict compliance with federal, state, company, and customer safety requirements.
The CDL Driver plays a critical role in supporting field operations by ensuring equipment and materials arrive safely, on time, and ready for production. This individual represents Gross Construction on public roadways, at customer locations, and on job sites, and is expected to demonstrate professionalism, attention to detail, and a strong commitment to safety at all times.
Core Responsibilities Transportation & Logistics- Safely operate Class A commercial vehicles, including:
- Tractor-trailers
- Lowboy trailers
- Equipment trailers
- Train combinations
- Transport construction equipment, materials, tools, and supplies to and from job sites.
- Properly load, secure, transport, and unload equipment in accordance with DOT regulations and company standards.
- Conduct route planning and coordinated deliveries to support project schedules.
- Verify load weights, dimensions, permits, and securement requirements before transport.
- Maintain accurate trip records, inspection reports, permits, and required documentation.
- Communicate delivery schedules, delays, and logistical concerns with supervisors and project personnel.
Equipment Handling- Safely load and unload:
- Excavators
- Dozers
- Skid steers
- Loaders
- Rollers
- Other construction equipment
- Inspect equipment prior to transport for damage or operational concerns.
- Assist with basic equipment maintenance and fueling as needed.
- Ensure all chains, binders, straps, and securement devices meet company and DOT standards.
Safety & Compliance- Perform required pre-trip, en-route, and post-trip inspections.
- Maintain full compliance with:
- Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (FMCSR)
- DOT requirements
- Company safety policies
- Customer and site-specific safety requirements
- Immediately report accidents, incidents, equipment damage, or safety concerns.
- Participate in safety meetings and training programs.
- Maintain a clean and organized vehicle and work area.
Team Support- Assist field crews with deliveries, equipment mobilization, and project support activities.
- Help coordinate equipment movement between projects and company facilities.
- Maintain positive working relationships with customers, vendors, inspectors, and coworkers.
- Support company goals through flexibility and willingness to assist when needed.
Required Qualifications Licensing & Certifications- Valid Class A CDL
- Current DOT Medical Certificate
- Ability to meet all DOT driver qualification requirements
- Acceptable Motor Vehicle Record (MVR)
- Ability to pass random drug and alcohol screening
- Minimum 3 years of commercial driving experience preferred
- Experience hauling heavy construction equipment preferred
Experience operating lowboy trailers required - Experience pulling train combinations required
- Familiarity with construction equipment loading and securement procedures
- Ability to climb in and out of trucks, trailers, and equipment
- Ability to frequently lift, carry, and move up to 75 pounds
- Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions
- Ability to bend, kneel, squat, climb, and perform physical labor as required
- Ability to work extended hours during peak construction seasons
To be considered and remain qualified for this position, drivers must:
- Maintain a valid Class A CDL at all times
- Maintain an acceptable driving record
- Successfully pass required pre-employment and random drug/alcohol testing
- Report all traffic violations, license suspensions, or accidents immediately
- Have no reckless driving convictions within the past 5 years
- Have no DUI/OWI convictions within the past 7 years
- Demonstrate safe driving habits and professional conduct while operating company vehicles
Gross Construction reserves the right to review driving records periodically and determine continued eligibility based on company insurance and safety requirements.
