Join Our Campus Community! The University of Wyoming Department of Visual Arts welcomes applications for a full time benefited one-year renewable contract Visiting Assistant Professor of Art Education and Foundations position. Qualified candidates will have the ability to teach the full range and variety of Art Education classes including Methods I, Methods II, Art Education Practicum, Curriculum Design, Elementary Residency, and Secondary Residency if needed.

The successful candidate would also be able to teach in a secondary area, such as 2D, Color Theory, and/or 3D Foundations, or other studio areas of expertise as needed. Their experience should include K-12 teaching experience as well as teaching in an Art Education College/University curriculum, familiarity with various Art Education pedagogies and philosophies, established scholarly and/or creative research, and familiarity with a variety of media used in Art Education classes.

Desired skills include experience as a skilled communicator with the ability to communicate orally, in writing and digitally; experience working in a collaborative team of educators; experience working with non-traditional students, first generation students, and students with disabilities; and experience in professional organizations. The successful candidate will incorporate equitable classroom policies such as encouraging inclusion and representation of diverse viewpoints and utilizing multiple methods of content delivery including in-person, online and hybrid modalities.

The Art Education Program at the University of Wyoming is the only four year Art Education degree in the state and professionally prepares students to be licensed K-12 art teachers upon graduation from UW. The Visual Arts Building, a state-of-the-art Leed Certified construction, was completed in 2012. An individual office and faculty studio space is provided for this position in the building.

The University of Wyoming and the Department of Visual Arts are accredited by NASAD.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Teach a 3/3 course load for the academic year potentially including ART 3430:
    Art Education Methods I, ART 3490:
    Art Education
    - Philosophy, Theory and Issues ART 3550:
    Art Education Practicum, ART 4440:
    Art Education Methods II, and Foundations classes as needed
  • Work collaboratively with other Art Education faculty to maintain communication with partners in Wyoming State Education offices, schools, community colleges and educators throughout the State of Wyoming, and with the College of Education within the University of Wyoming
  • Support and work with the coordinator of the Art Education Program to maintain and develop the program as needed
  • Provide service to the department as needed
  • Assist in the mentoring of BA in Art Education students and work closely with work-study students and post-undergraduate assistants as needed

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Terminal Degree in field, Master of Fine Arts and/or PhD in Art Education or ABD
  • 1 year teaching experience in Art Education and/or Studio
  • Demonstrated active professional practice and proficiency in a range of studio techniques and pedagogies applicable to Art Education, Foundations, and Studio Art curricula
  • Ability to support and work with the coordinator of the Art Education Program as needed
  • Demonstrated ability to work with others in a collegial team atmosphere and coordinate teaching with other instructors

Desired

Qualifications:

  • Preference for PhD, MA, MAT, or MAED in Art Education
  • Demonstrated K-12 teaching experience as well as teaching in an Art Education College/University curriculum
  • Ability to teach in other department areas with qualified experience
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
  • Ongoing engagement in scholarly, creative, and/or professional activities
  • Demonstrated ability to advise, mentor, and support students from all backgrounds in the classroom and department.
