GENERAL DESCRIPTION
The Wyoming Department of Agriculture, Analytical Services Laboratory, is searching for a Laboratory Scientist I with knowledge and experience in chemistry. This position will perform a variety of chemical analyses on meat, human and animal food, fertilizer, pesticide complaint samples, forage, hemp, water, fuel and aid in method development and testing of kratom. Our environmental laboratory performs a wide range of analyses from benchtop wet chemistry to testing on highly complex instrumentation.
The laboratory is ISO/IEC 17025 accredited, uses standard analytical methods, and provides a valuable service to Wyoming and regional residents.

- Performs routine and non-routine analytical analyses in the analytical chemistry laboratory on a variety of environmental samples, with a focus on kratom.
- Operates highly complex analyzers and performs manual tests following detailed instructions using safe, good laboratory practice.
- Follows standard analytical procedures while handling hazardous or infectious materials.
- Develops, maintains, and revises laboratory documents or policies.
- Develops new or revised test methods, standard operation procedures, and laboratory policies.
- Works independently under minimal supervision.
- Responds to requests for information from the public and departmental personnel.
- Preference may be given to the applicant with a bachelors degree in chemistry and experience with chromatography analyzers such as UHPLC, GC-MS, ICP-OES, LC-MS/MS, GC-QQQ.
- Knowledge of basic chemistry principles and theories.
- Knowledge of laboratory research principles and recording of daily work activities.
- Knowledge of highly technical laboratory analyzers such as UHPLC, GC-MS, ICP-OES, LC-MS, or combustion analyzers.
- Knowledge of laboratory quality control assurance practices, ISO accreditation, and safety Hazardous material control.
- Knowledge and ability to think critically and accurately to process complex data.
Education
:
Bachelor's Degree (typically in Science)
Experience
: 0-2 years of progressive work experience (typically in a medical or environmental laboratory) with acquired knowledge at the level of a Laboratory Assistant
OR
Education & Experience Substitution
: 3-5 years of progressive work experience (typically in a medical or environmental laboratory) with acquired knowledge at the level of a Laboratory Assistant

- Works closely with hazardous chemicals and substances.
- Works with environmental and food samples.
- Some tasks may be repetitive.
- Occasional exposure to loud noises.
- Must be able to stand for long periods of time.
