Position: Surveyor - RGV3 (Hidalgo County Sullivan City)

Surveyor - Heavy Civil Construction

Position Summary

Spencer Construction is seeking an experienced Surveyor to support heavy civil construction projects. The Surveyor is responsible for performing construction layout, establishing project control, verifying grades and alignments, and ensuring all work is completed in accordance with project plans and specifications. This position works closely with Project Managers, Superintendents, Engineers, and field crews to provide accurate survey data that supports safe and efficient project execution.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities
  • Perform construction staking and layout for earthwork, utilities, concrete, roads, drainage, and structural elements.
  • Establish and maintain horizontal and vertical project control.
  • Read and interpret construction plans, specifications, and engineering drawings.
  • Verify grades, elevations, alignments, and boundaries throughout all phases of construction.
  • Operate GPS, robotic total stations, data collectors, and other surveying equipment.
  • Collect and process field data to support project layout and quality control.
  • Prepare and maintain accurate field notes, survey reports, and as-built documentation.
  • Coordinate survey activities with Project Managers, Project Engineers, and Superintendents.
  • Perform quantity verification and assist with progress measurements as needed.
  • Ensure survey work complies with project specifications, safety standards, and applicable regulations.
  • Troubleshoot layout discrepancies and communicate issues to project leadership.
  • Maintain and calibrate surveying equipment.
Qualifications
  • High school diploma or GED required;
    Associate's degree in Surveying, Civil Engineering Technology, or related field preferred.
  • Minimum of 3 years of construction surveying experience, preferably in heavy civil construction.
  • Experience with GPS survey equipment, robotic total stations, and survey software.
  • Proficiency with Trimble, Leica, Topcon, Carlson, Civil 3D, or similar surveying technology preferred.
  • Strong understanding of grading, earthwork, utilities, road construction, and site development.
  • Ability to read and interpret construction plans and engineering drawings.
  • Strong mathematical, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent communication and organizational abilities.
  • Valid driver's license with an acceptable driving record.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience on federal or government construction projects.
  • Familiarity with machine control systems and digital terrain models.
  • Professional Land Surveyor (PLS) or Surveyor-in-Training (SIT) certification is a plus but not required.
Physical Requirements
  • Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions.
  • Walk long distances over rough and uneven terrain.
  • Lift and carry up to 50 pounds.

    Ability to bend, kneel, climb, and stand for extended periods.
