Student Tutor I (ACE-AS)
Provides routine non-classroom, academic instruction to students.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Meets students and goes over their homework assignments in applicable subject area.
- Asks students about specific topics or subject areas that warrant further exploration.
- Reviews homework and test scores, and works through problems or questions.
- Provides study aids to assist. May perform as lead for other Tutors.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
Additional Responsibilities:
- Tutor students, individually and in groups.
- Facilitates learning of course material.
- Leads SI (Supplemental Instruction) sessions.
- Models effective learning and study strategies for content mastery.
- Attends assigned classes.
- Arranges and keeps work hours at the ULC.
- Develops and maintains a professional relationship with SI course instructors.
- Maintains confidential records.
- Prepares reports.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
Minimum Requirements:
- Enrolled at least half-time, 6 credit hours per semester for undergraduate and 3 credit hours per semester for graduates.
- Maintains a TAMIU overall GPA of 2.0 for undergraduate students and 3.0 for graduate students.
- Meets all other requirements as stated in TAMIU's Satisfactory Academic Progress Policy (SAPP).
Preferred Requirements:
- Experience working with college/university students in an educational setting.
- Tutoring experience in content area.
Knowledge and Abilities:
- Ability to communicate effectively, orally and in writing.
- Ability to interact effectively, professionally, and tactfully with students, faculty, and other university personnel.
- Ability to motivate students.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality.
- Ability to arrange and keep a work schedule.
- Strong academic knowledge in content area.
- Computer literate in Microsoft Word and PowerPoint.
- Ability to prepare and facilitate workshops, presentations, and orientations to groups of students.
- Ability to think critically and problem solve.
Other Requirements:
- Position requires on campus, face-to-face interactions.
- Position requires maintaining a regular schedule of attendance on campus and in the workplace.
- Work schedules are created by the department based on departmental needs but ensure it does not conflict with class schedule.
- Promptly complete all required trainings.
- Submit time sheet biweekly.
- Some evening and weekend work may be required.
- Subject to funding and/or need.
Pay Rate: $10.50/hour for up to 19 hours weekly
