Position Overview

Surveyors and Crew Chiefs are needed to lead surveying operations on heavy civil infrastructure projects, ranging from $50M to $1B. The role involves field surveying, data management, quality control, and collaboration with engineering and construction teams to ensure precision and safety.

Location

Current multi-year project in San Ygnacio, Texas. Future opportunities in CO, MN, NM, ND, SD, NE, KS, MO, IA, WY, MT, TN, or KY. Willingness to travel to project sites, with paid trips home and occasional travel to the district office in Lone Tree, Colorado.

District Overview

Kiewit's Central District operates across central and south‑central U.S., handling highways, bridges, mass transit, canals, and more. The district provides a full‑service construction team with extensive equipment for site clearance, earthwork, grading, utilities, and bridge construction.

Responsibilities
  • As a Surveyor:
    • Execute construction surveys, including boundary, topographic, control, and construction staking. Operate GPS, drones, robotic total stations, Trimble Business Center, and 3D scanners.
    • Interpret plans, deeds, and specifications to guide field work.
    • Manage GIS data for mapping and analysis.
    • Assist with AutoCAD and Civil 3D deliverables with CAD engineers.
    • Troubleshoot and resolve survey‑related challenges on‑site.
    • Communicate with superintendents, field crews, engineers, project managers, and clients to ensure alignment on scope, schedule, and deliverables.
    • Follow safety and quality practices.
  • As a Crew Chief:
    • Lead surveying operations, ensuring accuracy, efficiency, and adherence to specifications.
    • Develop and implement surveying plans, methodologies, and best practices; collaborate with project managers and engineers to create plans and schedules.
    • Lead and mentor a team of surveyors and field personnel.
    • Coordinate with construction teams to align design intent with field execution.
    • Use advanced technology (GPS, total stations, LiDAR, drones) to capture and analyze data.
    • Conduct quality control checks to verify accuracy and contract compliance.
    • Manage data processing, integrating with project management and BIM software.
    • Prepare detailed survey reports, logs, and documentation.
    • Ensure compliance with all regulations and company policies.
    • Troubleshoot on‑site challenges, adapting to changing conditions.
    • Skillfully use Trimble Business Center and CAD (AutoCAD, Civil 3D, Microstation) for calculations and elevations.
    • Communicate project updates to all stakeholders.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree preferred;
    Professional Land Surveyor (PLS) certification is an asset (assisted with certification if not already held).
  • Surveyor: 5+ years of field construction survey experience, particularly in heavy civil infrastructure or anchor bolt/down‑civils for power and water projects.
  • Crew Chief:
    Prefer degree; PLS certification asset; 5+ years in surveying and 2+ years leading crews; experience with heavy civil highway, bridge, power plant, water, or tunneling projects.
  • Trimble Access/Business Center proficiency required for Crew Chiefs; preferred for Surveyors.
  • Proficiency with GPS, total stations, LiDAR, and data collection tools required; drone experience preferred.
  • Ability to perform basic algebra and geometry calculations (area, volume, circumference, proportion, percentage).
  • Crew Chief candidates: some CAD experience (AutoCAD, Civil 3D, Microstation) and GIS platforms required; MS Office Suite proficiency necessary.
  • Dynamic thinker who leads, motivates, mentors, and manages performance; self‑starter with a commitment to safety, quality, and productivity.
  • For both roles:
    • Excellent written and verbal communication; strong stakeholder engagement.
    • Valid driver’s license; willing to travel regionally.
    • Adaptable to outdoor fieldwork in varied terrain and weather.
    • Willing to travel as needed to projects; per diem and trips home provided for long durations.
    • Physically able to lift equipment and perform manual tasks; strong work ethic and commitment to safety.
