Job Summary

Responsible for supervising the day‑to‑day operations of a water treatment plant.

Major Duties
  • Direct the day‑to‑day operation of the water treatment plant.
  • Operate equipment to control water flow and maintain proper operating levels.
  • Service, maintain, operate, and repair facilities and equipment including large‑scale pumping devices, chlorination and other chemical feed systems, storage facilities, and related equipment.
  • Collect samples; perform laboratory analyses to ensure treatment facilities are operating efficiently; supervise and carry out corrective actions.
  • Train, assign, supervise, evaluate, and discipline personnel.
  • Make rounds of plants; read gauges and meters; record readings.
  • Purchase equipment, materials, and supplies.
  • Maintain maintenance and chemical analysis records; prepare logs, records, and reports, including required local, state, and federal reports.
  • Prioritize job assignments for subordinates.
  • Respond to after‑hours emergencies.
  • Attend required training classes.
  • Perform any other duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Knowledge of water treatment principles, operations, and equipment.
  • Knowledge of computers and job‑related software programs.
  • Knowledge of chemistry, mathematics, hydraulics, and biology.
  • Knowledge of department and county policies and procedures, and federal, state, and local laws and regulations.
  • Skill in the operation and maintenance of mechanical and electronic equipment.
  • Skill in planning, organization, and decision‑making.
  • Skill in supervising personnel.
  • Skill in thinking clearly under difficult circumstances.
  • Skill in oral and written communication.
  • Ability to communicate in English and speak Spanish.
Minimum Qualifications
  • High school diploma or GED.
  • At least one year of related experience.
  • Possession of or ability to obtain a state‑certified license for water or wastewater treatment or distribution, as appropriate.
Additional Requirements
  • Valid and current Texas driver’s license (or obtain one if holding an out‑of‑state license).
  • Pre‑employment drug and alcohol testing, MVR check, and criminal background check required.
  • This position is covered by Civil Service rules and county policies.
Physical Demands

Occasionally:

  • Ascending or descending ladders, stairs, scaffolding, ramps, or poles.
  • Moving in various positions, including tight and confined spaces.
  • Standing or sitting for prolonged periods.
  • Moving between work sites.
  • Adjusting or moving objects up to 50 pounds.
  • Repeating motions of wrists, hands, and fingers.
  • Operating machinery or power tools.
  • Operating motor vehicles or heavy equipment.
  • Driving a county vehicle or personal vehicle for county business.
  • Working in low or high temperatures.
  • Working in outdoor weather conditions, noise, hazardous, and poor ventilation environments.
  • Working in small or enclosed spaces and adverse environmental conditions.
  • Light work up to 20 pounds and medium work up to 50 pounds.
