Medical Death Investigator, Part Time, Medical Examiner

Job Summary

*** Revised: 7/28/2026 This position is responsible for examining death cases and reporting them to the Medical Examiner.

• Reports to locations of deaths, makes death pronouncements, and transports decedents.
• Communicates with law enforcement, medical staff, and families to gather information.
• Prepares decedents for examinations.
• Inventories medications belonging to the decedent.
• Investigates crime scenes; takes photographs with a digital camera.
• Releases decedents following established policies and procedures; releases decedent's property.
• Prepares written reports.
• Performs any other duties as assigned.

• Knowledge of crime scene investigation procedures and techniques.
• Knowledge of Texas laws and regulations related to death investigations.
• Knowledge of medical terminology.
• Knowledge of computers and job-related software applications.
• Skill in analyzing problems and developing and implementing effective solutions.
• Skill in preparing clear and precise reports.
• Ability to communicate orally and in writing in the English language and orally in the Spanish language.

• Must have a Bachelor's degree from an accredited school in Criminal Justice or any science-related field.

Complexity/Scope of Work

• The work consists of a variety of investigatory duties. The unique nature of each case contributes to the complexity of the position.
• The purpose of this position is to gather information to be used by the Medical Examiner in the determination of cause and manner of death. Success in this position contributes to public safety.

Physical Demands/Work Environment

Occasionally

• Ascending or descending ladders, stairs, scaffolding, ramps, or poles.
• Moving oneself in different positions to accomplish tasks in various environments, including tight and confined spaces.
• Working in low temperatures.
• Working in high temperatures.
• Working in outdoor elements such as precipitation and wind.

• Working in hazardous conditions.
• Working in poor ventilation.
• Working in small and/or enclosed spaces.
• Working in adverse environmental conditions is expected.

• Remaining in a stationary position, often standing or sitting for prolonged periods.
• Moving to accomplish tasks or moving from one worksite to another.
• Adjusting or moving objects up to 200 pounds in all directions.
• Communicating with others to exchange information.
• Repeating motions that may include the use of wrists, hands, and/or fingers.
• Operating motor vehicles or heavy equipment.
• Assessing the accuracy, neatness, and thoroughness of the work assigned.
• Driving a County vehicle or a personal vehicle for County business.
• Light work that includes carrying objects up to 20 pounds.
• Medium work that includes carrying objects up to 50 pounds.
• Heavy work that includes carrying objects up to 100 pounds or more.

Other Requirements/Information

• Must possess a valid and current Texas driver's license.
• The Webb County Drug and Alcohol Policy applies to this position. Pre-employment drug and alcohol testing, a Motor Vehicle Record (MVR) check, and a criminal background check are required.
• This position is not covered by Civil Service; therefore, it is subject to the Civil Service Rules and Regulations in addition to all other Webb County policies.
