Job DescriptionJob Summary
The Assistant Chief of Police, under direction, oversees general administration for all law enforcement functions assigned to Field Operations within the Department of Security and University Police. Ensures that programs are in place to maximize security of people and property on campus. In the absence of the Chief, may assume overall responsibility for the operation of the department.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities- Monitors and evaluates the efficiency and effectiveness of police service methods and procedures and recommends appropriate service and staffing levels.
- Responds to and resolves difficult and sensitive citizen inquires and complaints. Responds to questions and information requests from the public.
- Manages services and activities of assigned functional area. Coordinates the activities of personnel in preserving order, protecting life and property, investigating crimes, and enforcing state laws.
- Supervises assigned staff.
- Serves as backup to the Chief of Police.
- Assists in the development of departmental goals, objectives, policies and procedures. Formulates rules, procedures and standards for assigned divisions and ensures they are maintained.
- Ensures compliance with all local, state, and federal reporting requirements.
- Responds to requests for information from government agencies and the general public.
- Conducts and completes special projects.

Additional Responsibilities- Maintaining department's accreditation which may include but is not limited to review and updating of department's policies and standing general orders.
- Education
- Bachelor's degree. - Experience
- Ten years as a Certified Peace Officer. - An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
Education and Experience
- 15 years as a Certified Peace Officer with experience in higher education campus law enforcement.
- Word processing and spreadsheet applications.
- Thorough knowledge of Criminal Justice System.
- Leadership and management abilities.
- Multitask and work cooperatively with others.
- Strong interpersonal and organizational skills.
- Communicate effectively with all segments of the campus population.
- Function under adverse and stressful conditions.

- Texas Commission on Law Enforcement (TCOLE) Master Peace Officer Certification

Supervision of Others
This position generally supervises employees.
Other Requirements- All System University police will be required to meet minimum licensing standard requirements as required by the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement (TCOLE) § 217.1.
- Work beyond normal office hours and/or work on weekends.
- Position requires on-campus, face-to-face interactions.
- Position requires maintaining a regular schedule of attendance on campus and in the workplace.
- Must successfully pass psychological evaluation, physical examination, and complete background investigation to include but not limited to driving history, criminal background, and credit history.
Salary: $80,000-$92,000/annual
