Position: Undergraduate Research Assistant (Engineering- Total Organic Carbon)

Job Description Job Summary

The research assistant will support the project on Disentangling causes of Rhythmic Bedding and Variations in Total Organic Carbon content in Mixed (Siliciclastic-carbonate) fine-grained marine deposits of the Cenomanian-Turonian Western Interior Seaway.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Assists in the coordination of the project.
  • Assists in data and sample collection from fields (southern Colorado and west Texas) and core research centers (BEG Core repository, Austin).
  • Sample preparation in the lab. Specific tasks may include sample cutting and polishing, making thin section billets and polished pellets, grinding and making powders.
  • Observations and data collection in the field and lab.
  • Compilation of results into reports or presentations.
  • Maintain participant data and assist with reporting requirements of the project.
  • Other related duties as assigned.
Minimum Requirements
  • Enrolled at least half-time, 6 credit hours per semester for undergraduate.
  • Maintain a TAMIU overall GPA of 2.0 for undergraduate students.
  • Must meet all other requirements as stated in TAMIU’s Satisfactory Academic Progress Policy (SAPP).
Preferred Experience and Education
  • Previous experience in undergraduate research
  • Interests in conducting fieldwork
  • Petroleum Engineering degree
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Knowledge of:

  • Word processing and spreadsheet applications.

Ability to:

  • Multitask and work cooperatively with others.
  • Verbal and written communication skills.
  • Prepare and conduct lab work, present findings and deliver conclusions.

  • Position requires on campus, face-to-face interactions.

  • Promptly complete all required training.
  • Submit time sheet biweekly.
  • Some evening and weekend work may be required.
  • Subject to funding and/or need.
Pay of Rate

$12.50/hour for up to 18 hours weekly
