Job Summary

The Research Assistant works under supervision for the Microbiome Profiles of the Rio Grande and South Texas Farms, assisting in running and managing ongoing research projects.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Research and collect data through complex techniques and procedures.
  • Assist with data management and perform basic statistical analyses.
  • Develop assessment and evaluation tools.
Additional Responsibilities
  • Maintain detailed lab notebook documentation.
  • Maintain aseptic techniques.
Minimum Requirements
  • Must be enrolled at least half‑time (minimum 6 credit hours per semester for undergraduates).
  • Maintain an overall TAMIU GPA of 2.0 for undergraduate students.
  • Meet all other requirements as stated in TAMIU’s Satisfactory Academic Progress Policy (SAPP).
Preferred Experience and Education
  • Enrolled in a Biology degree program with at least 12 credit hours of advanced coursework.
  • Working knowledge of molecular biology and microbiology protocols.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Proficiency in use of personal computer workstation with common software applications.
  • Ability to organize and multitask to ensure compliance with deadlines.
  • Outstanding customer service skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal relationship and communication skills.
  • Problem analysis and problem‑solving skills.
  • Ability to learn and use multiple software programs.

Other Requirements
  • Position requires on‑campus, face‑to‑face interactions.

  • Promptly complete all required training.
  • Submit timesheet biweekly.
  • Subject to funding and/or need.

Eligibility for Student Employment
  • Undergraduate students: must be enrolled in at least 6 credit hours per semester of college‑level courses or accepted remedial courses;
    International undergraduate students must be enrolled in at least 12 semester credit hours to meet federal immigration guidelines;
    Must maintain a 2.0 TAMIU overall GPA.
  • Graduate students: must be enrolled in at least 3 credit hours per semester;
    International graduate students must enroll in 9 semester credit hours to meet federal immigration guidelines;
    Must maintain a 3.0 TAMIU overall GPA;
    Students who will be graduating may enroll for less than half time for their final semester. Must submit proof of graduation.
