General Maintenance Worker - Laredo/Del Rio, Texas

Position Summary:

This position performs general maintenance of buildings and equipment requiring practical skill and knowledge (but not proficiency) in such trades as painting, carpentry, plumbing, masonry, electrical work, and key card locks in the Laredo / Del Rio areas of Texas. This position requires traveling to remote work sites and completing tasks independently. Occasionally responding to after-hours emergency calls to mitigate issues and prevent damage to equipment.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities
  • Replace electrical receptacles, wires, switches, fixtures, and motors.
  • Replace filters, belts, etc.
  • Use plaster or compound to patch minor holes and cracks in walls and ceilings.
  • Repair or replace sinks, water coolers, and toilets.
  • Paint structures and equipment.
  • Repair or replace concrete floors, steps, and sidewalks.
  • Replace damaged paneling and floor tiles.
  • Hang doors and install door locks; assist with lock outs, battery changes, and rekeying cards.
  • Replace broken windowpanes.
  • Perform general maintenance on equipment and machinery.
  • Flexible scheduling to include on-call rotations, occasional overtime, and some weekend work.
  • Perform other duties and responsibilities as required or requested.
Education and/or Experience
  • Minimum requirements include a High School Diploma or equivalent GED plus a minimum of three (3) years general mechanical, electrical, carpentry, or maintenance experience within the past four years. Completion of a technical/vocational school in general maintenance skills or comparable training such as military/industry experience may be an equivalent substitute.
  • A valid Texas Driver’s License and the ability to maintain DHS Facility access are required.
  • Experience performing preventative maintenance on equipment and machinery.
  • Experience responding to and completing repairs on work orders.
Critical Factors for Success
  • Knowledge of building repair and maintenance.
  • Knowledge of general mechanical, electrical and/or carpentry.
  • Knowledge of drywall, wood framing, concrete, and other building materials.
  • Knowledge of safety procedures.
  • Skill in operation of hand and power tools.
  • Skill in establishing priorities and organizing work.
  • Skill in public and interpersonal relations.
  • Skill in oral and written communications.
Communication Skills

Must have the ability to respond to common inquiries or complaints from customers, managers, and staff members, write reports, and effectively present information and respond to questions from managers, fellow employees, and customers.

Reasoning Ability

Must be able to read and interpret various information to ensure procedures are followed.

Physical Demands

The employee is frequently required to stand, walk, sit, use hands to finger, handle, or feel, reach with hands and arms, and talk or hear. The employee is occasionally required to climb or balance, stoop, kneel, or crouch. The employee may occasionally be required to lift more than 50 pounds. The employee must have close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, and the ability to adjust focus.

Work Environment

Work environment will require daily travel using a company vehicle to various sites around the RGV area. The employee may be exposed to noise, dirt, dust, grease, machinery with moving parts, irritating chemicals, and occasional cold, heat, and inclement weather. The work may require the use of protective devices, such as respirators, masks, goggles, and/or gloves.

A background check and drug screen will be performed for this position.
