Southwire’s Electrical Products division (EP) is responsible for the strategic growth of electrical equipment, lifting and material handling equipment, and electrical products and components. EP seeks an experienced mechanical engineer to lead new product development and engineering support for products released to the field. The engineer will interface directly with project management, product managers, and operations on new products, engineering changes, and compliance requirements throughout the product lifecycle.
Key Responsibilities- Ability to create all drawings, models and 3‑D printed models for assigned products
- Create BOMs and costed BOMs
- Own assigned products to ensure design meets all industry codes and standards
- Follow all engineering processes and protocols for assigned design projects, including FEA, DVP&R, DFMEA, design reviews, FAIRs, ECR, and PRAPs
- Create design specifications per Program Manager and Project Manager requests
- Work closely with Project Management to get projects through the stage‑gate approval process
- Create prototypes for testing and evaluation
- Coordinate engineering and PRAP builds with operations engineer and operations manager
- Develop certification plans and coordinate third‑party certification testing with Product Compliance Manager
- Work with operations engineering to ensure manufacturability of assigned products
- Lead design validation testing for assigned products and projects
- Stay current on the latest engineering and product trends to meet industry demand
- Bachelor of Science (B.S.) in Mechanical Engineering
- 2+ years of mechanical and/or machinery design
- 2+ years of manufacturing or process engineering experience preferred
- Proficiency in Solid Works and other CAD applications, including simulations
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office, Project, Excel, and Power Point
- Exceptional interpersonal skills and ability to work independently and collaboratively with engineering and non‑technical staff
