Job Summary

Join Our Team and Help Keep Largo’s Greens in Top Shape! The City of Largo is looking for a skilled and dedicated Golf Course Mechanic to maintain and repair light-duty gasoline and diesel-powered equipment used to care for our municipal golf course and landscaped city facilities. This position is vital to ensuring that our equipment runs smoothly and our greens stay pristine.

What

You’ll Do
  • Perform preventive maintenance and repairs on a variety of turf, grounds, and light-duty equipment.
  • Diagnose and repair mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, and fuel system issues.
  • Maintain records of repairs, inspections, and service schedules.
  • Ensure all equipment is operating safely and in compliance with established guidelines.
  • Work independently under general supervision from the Greens Superintendent.
What We’re Looking For
  • Experience working with small engines, hydraulics, and landscape equipment.
  • Knowledge of proper maintenance techniques for gasoline and diesel-powered machinery.
  • Ability to troubleshoot and repair equipment efficiently.
  • Self‑motivated and able to work independently with minimal oversight.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Diagnose and repair hydraulic systems, brakes, compact diesel engines, compact gas engines, equipment electrical systems, cutting reels, chemical spray equipment, trimmers, saws, and edgers.
  • Develop and maintain filing systems for expenditures related to equipment maintenance and repair.
  • Inspect grounds equipment such as hand and power‑driven lawn mowers, tractors, utility vehicles, trap rake machines, verticut equipment, aerifiers, fertilizer spreaders, sod cutters, vacuums, and other related equipment.
  • Make adjustments to equipment per manufacturer specifications; remove, repair, or replace parts, sharpen reels, and grind bed knives for mowers.
  • Replace fan and drive belts, spark plugs, points, set timing and adjust carburetors; perform minor service tasks such as lubrication, oil or fuel filter changes, and transmission/differential lubricants.
  • Repair electric golf cars and perform minor welding work incidental to on‑site repair.
  • Retrieve dead or stranded equipment in the field.
  • Participate in manufacturer or industry‑specific training or certification classes as available and authorized.

Minimum Qualifications
  • High school diploma or GED and two (2) years of experience in the maintenance of pumps, valves, motors, and/or controls for lawn mowers, tractors, weed eaters, etc.; or equivalent combination of training and experience.
Knowledge,

Skills and Abilities
  • Knowledge of the methods and techniques used in small‑engine maintenance.
  • Ability to inspect, troubleshoot, diagnose, and repair small engines; read meters, service manuals, and charts accurately.
  • Maintain records and understand how to follow oral and written instructions.
  • Skill in using and caring for tools, materials, and equipment.
Work Environment &

Physical Requirements
  • 10% indoor climate‑controlled, 90% outdoor, including driving.
  • Essential functions:

    sitting ~1hour, standing ~6hours, walking ~1hour per day.
  • Frequent bending, stooping, climbing, crawling, fine manipulations, grasping, kneeling, pulling, pushing, reaching, repetitive motion, and lifting/carrying objects up to 44lbs (occasionally >45lbs).
  • Required abilities: hearing, speaking, seeing for equipment operation, and driving with a valid Florida Driver’s License.
  • Technology: use of telephones, smart phones, tablets, printers, computers, calculators, and associated software.
  • Tools: proficiency with wrenches, files, grinders, floor jacks, welders, cutting torches, drills, screwdrivers, and other required tools.
Emergency Response Status

As a condition of employment, employees will be required to work as directed during an undeclared and/or declared emergency. All employees are subject to recall for emergency response operations, which may require irregular work hours, work at different locations, and duties beyond those specified in the official job description.

Important Information

Drug testing required (safety‑sensitive). No childcare fingerprinting, credit check, or FDLE/CJSTC security clearance is required unless the employee will access restricted technology or facilities.
