Position: Solid Waste Driver I

Salary: $23.83 hourly rate

Job Summary

Driving position handling the collection of solid waste, trash, brush, or recycled materials. Operates a solid waste collection vehicle in tight, confined locations and in the presence of other vehicles and pedestrians, under the direction of a supervisor.

    • Operates front-loader, roll-off, claw, auto side-loader, and/or manual rear-loader as directed by the Solid Waste Manager.
    • Completes a minimum of 160 hours of operation of each truck during the first year; 80 hours in subsequent years.
    • Conducts pre‑trip and post‑trip inspections, reports maintenance needs, and performs routine housekeeping.
    • Teaches trainee drivers proper operation of solid waste vehicles.

Emergency Response Status

Employees are required to work during declared or undeclared emergencies, with irregular hours and duties beyond the official job description.

Minimum Qualifications
  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • One year experience operating commercial vehicles requiring a Florida Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) Class

    B.
  • Possession of a valid Florida CDL Class

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Knowledge of traffic rules and regulations.
  • Knowledge of operation of commercial vehicles requiring a Florida CDL Class

    B.
  • Knowledge of hazards of operation and appropriate safety rules and regulations.
  • Ability to understand and carry out oral and written instruction and to work independently.
  • Basic computer and/or tablet skills for routing equipment.
Work Environment &

Physical Requirements

5% indoor climate-controlled environment; 95% outdoor driving. Must sit, stand, walk 8–10 hours daily and perform frequent bending, stooping, lifting up to 50lb, and occasional lifting over 50lb.

Truck types and requirements:

  • Roll‑off – 53in. cab height, requires 56‑in. climbing; heavy pushing/pulling for container servicing.
  • Rear‑loader – 19in. cab height; routines include lifting up to 50lb.
  • Automated Side‑loader – 43in. cab height; services 65‑/95‑gal containers.
  • Front‑loader – 40in. cab height; services 2–8cubic‑yard dumpsters.
  • Claw Truck – 46in. cab height; runs crane, rakes debris, and empties container.
