We are looking for an experienced, hands-on Director of Engineering to direct the execution of day-to-day engineering activities for CALCULEX, a Spectra A&D Company. The Director of Engineering responsibilities will include directing the efforts of multiple engineering project teams, setting long and short-term project goals, providing technical direction and decisions to the team, developing product roadmaps and long term strategic plans in collaboration with the Spectra A&D CTO and CALCULEX executive team, interacting with key customers, working closely with key supply chain partners, ensuring that projects stay within time and budgetary restraints, and reporting status to the rest of the CALCULEX executive team and Spectra A&D CEO.
The position will require occasional travel (25%) and an ability to work collaboratively with the internal CALCULEX team, key CALCULEX customers, and the Spectra A&D executive team. The position will report directly to the company's Vice President/General Manager. The position will be based in Las Cruces, NM at CALCULEX's main facility.
JOB DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
- Direct the execution of multiple military electronics/avionics product development projects from start to completion.
- Provide technical guidance, mentoring, and direction/decisions to a growing team of approximately 15 engineering staff, including system, electrical, mechanical, and software engineers.
- Develop bids and proposals in collaboration with the CALCULEX/Spectra Sales & Marketing team. This includes estimating Non-Recurring and Recurring costs, including labor hours, material, and ODC.
- Develop and track schedules for all engineering projects in collaboration with the CALCULEX Program Management team.
- Review and approve all product designs, including conducting SRR's, PDR's, CDR's, TRR's and other reviews with the design teams.
- Direct and ensure successful completion of all product Qualification Testing
- Communicate the goals of the company to all engineers and professionals on the engineering team.
- Interact on a frequent basis with all key customers and key supply chain partners and teammates
- Perform Technical Risk Management on all projects including risk identification, classification, and mitigation techniques
- Develop technology roadmaps to drive product development plans for the Company
- 15+ years in the aerospace and defense industry
- 10-15 years designing, developing, and prototyping digital electronics with military avionics product development experience
- Experience in high-complexity, low volume, high mix aerospace and defense product development.
- Experience with telemetry instrumentation systems development/upgrades (e.g. precision timing)
- Computer Science degree with emphasis on successive redefinition top-down modular design and/or Electrical Engineering degree with multi-disciplinary study (AC Circuits, Digital Circuits, Communication)
- Masters in EE or Computer Science preferred
- Small company background and experience preferred
- Systems engineering expertise. Experience developing and/or reviewing complex technical requirements for product development projects
- Recent experience managing teams using the latest military recording and processing technologies
- Demonstrated experience collaborating closely with internal finance, sales & marketing, quality, manufacturing and test, and supply chain cross-functional teams
- Experience interacting with engineering and program leadership at the major aerospace prime contractors (LM, NG, RTN, Boeing, ...). Excellent customer relations skills.
- Process oriented/disciplined engineering mindset
- Strong team building and product development/project management skills and experience
- Strong bias for action & collaboration
- Experience assembling and evaluating complex bids and proposals including technical, cost, and schedule estimates for non-recurring engineering efforts, qual testing, SDRL's, and recurring manufacturing bid models.
- Experience leading design concept reviews; system requirements reviews; preliminary design reviews; critical design reviews; and test readiness reviews
- Experience providing technical guidance, mentoring, and direction/decisions to a team of system, electrical, mechanical, and software engineers. Ability to coach and develop leaders within the team with challenging assignments and opportunities for additional responsibilities and career growth
- Technical Risk Management experience - identification, classification, and mitigation techniques
- Experience developing and tracking key performance metrics
- Ability to develop technology roadmaps to drive product development plans
- This individual will be comfortable working in an organization where short decision-making cycles, decisiveness, and individual responsibility and accountability are expected and valued.
- A demonstrated tactful, but aggressive style to meet deadlines, be extremely responsive, and lead in a team-oriented environment.
