Job Summary
Performs entry‑level professional engineering work, including plan design, project management and/or contract administration to ensure quality and timely services and meet established objectives.
Work EnvironmentPosition may involve inside and outside work, depending on functional area. Outside work involves exposure to all weather and traffic conditions, uneven terrain, noise, dust, gases, asbestos, radiation, electrical systems and construction equipment.
Frequent to constant use of a personal computer. Assignment may involve light to moderate physical activity with ability to lift and carry items weighing up to forty (40) pounds and ability to ambulate on uneven surfaces. Safety equipment includes hard hat, traffic vest, ear plugs, eye protection and safety shoes.
Position involves competing demands, performing multiple tasks, working to deadlines, occasional work beyond normal business hours, and responding to customer issues. Regular attendance is an essential function of this job to ensure continuity of services. Position is subject to drug testing in accordance with State and Federal regulations and applicable City of Las Cruces policies.
Responsibilities- Creates construction drawings and documents for roadway, traffic signals, street lights, multi‑use paths, drainage systems, water/wastewater systems and natural gas systems; performs calculations in accordance with City design standards.
- Drafts projects using manual and Computer Aided Design Drafting (CADD) equipment to create engineering drawings from field data, sketches, rough drawings, raw data, diagrams and verbal/written narrative instructions.
- Prepares preliminary and final cost estimates, contract documents, material specifications, schedules, bid tabs and correspondence to meet established deadlines; reviews material testing lab and project payments to verify that correct unit prices are used; forwards payment requests for approval and timely payment.
- Performs studies of existing infrastructure to recommend improvements and prepare and present various special and recurring reports.
- Assists with coordination of projects; provides information and documentation regarding various projects in response to inquiries and/or concerns; assists with monitoring progress by reviewing construction schedules and conducting field inspections of projects; communicates with inspectors and contractors to address issues, conflicts, delays, and corrections to materials or methods; may provide work direction to work crews and other engineering staff.
- Schedules, directs and conducts meetings with engineers, developers, surveyors, contractors, inspectors, residents and staff to provide timely and consistent information and discuss comments and design standard requirements.
- Reviews subdivision preliminary and final plats and re‑plats, subdivision construction plans and cost breakdowns, commercial building plans, right of way plans, drainage and geo‑technical reports.
- Conducts preliminary survey and construction staking; performs project reconnaissance; measures features and slopes; maps utility blue stakes; uses aerial photographs and digital maps of properties to identify owners and uses digital maps of utilities to identify size and types of lines.
- Generates contract bid documents to include quantity tallies and written specifications for bid items.
Bachelor's Degree in Civil Engineering or related engineering discipline. Some experience in engineering is preferred. A combination of education, experience, and training may be applied in accordance with City of Las Cruces policy.
- Valid driver's license is required. Position requires an acceptable driving record in accordance with City policy.
- Must obtain a New Mexico Engineer‑in‑Training (EIT) Certification within one (1) year of hire date. May require Storm Water Pollution Prevention Certification.
