Position Overview

Under limited supervision, the Senior Windows System Administrator leads and manages the planning, installation, configuration, operation, and maintenance of Microsoft Windows server systems and related infrastructure, including analysis and engineering of system solutions.

Work is performed in a standard office environment.

Physical Factors

Light physical demands; ability to lift up to 25 pounds; frequent use of a personal computer.

Work Situation Factors

The role involves managing competing demands, multitasking, meeting deadlines, occasional after-hours work, and responding to customer issues. The position is subject to drug testing according to State and Federal regulations and City policies. Regular attendance is essential for service continuity.

First consideration may be given to current City of Las Cruces employees who meet all minimum requirements. Meeting or exceeding minimum qualifications does not guarantee participation in the process.

This is a full-time, regular, exempt position at grade RX23.

Duties and Responsibilities
  • Install, configure, troubleshoot, and administer a medium-sized server environment, including Windows Server, Active Directory, Microsoft Exchange, System Center, Virtualization, SQL Server, iSCSI SANs, and related applications.
  • Generate system maintenance reports on capacity, performance, security, and change management.
  • Analyze future business needs, recommend changes, evaluate new products, manage licenses, and maintain documentation.
  • Assist with IT projects and provide technical support to ensure system reliability and performance.
  • Lead and resolve issues related to desktop OS deployment, group policy, and updates.
  • Support Windows Server infrastructure, including installation, maintenance, monitoring, and troubleshooting.
  • Verify hardware and system integrity, review logs, and ensure backups are completed.
  • Manage server operations, patches, upgrades, and hardware/software repairs.
  • Collaborate with Security Specialists to establish security policies.
  • Meet regularly with staff to review work, prioritize tasks, and evaluate procedures.
  • Prepare reports and maintain compliance with industry regulations.
  • Respond to and resolve complaints and issues.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s Degree in computer science, MIS, or related field, plus three years of enterprise-level Windows systems administration experience in a multi-server environment. A combination of education, experience, and training may be considered.

Licenses/Certifications:

Valid driver’s license required; MSCE 2003 or MCITP (Enterprise) preferred. An acceptable driving record is also required.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Knowledge of: principles and practices related to system operations, record keeping, research, customer service, safety, and software applications; city policies and procedures.

Ability to: prioritize tasks, provide excellent customer service, ensure policy compliance, maintain confidentiality, communicate effectively, prepare reports, and establish effective relationships. Operate tools and equipment safely, and exercise sound judgment.

Skills in: applying rules and regulations, managing assignments, responding to inquiries, working independently or in teams, preparing reports, researching data, operating computers, and resolving conflicts effectively.
