The MOUD/MAT Nurse provides skilled nursing services to incarcerated individuals with opioid use disorders at the New Mexico Corrections Department (NMCD). The nurse performs ongoing risk assessments, triage, teaching, inductions, stabilizations, medication administration and monitoring of patients in the MOUD treatment program, and assists in the primary care of patients within the program.
Duties / Responsibilities- Work in collaboration with Recovery Service Specialists (RSS) and Mental Health Providers (MHP).
- Collaborate, communicate, and meet with the MOUD/MAT treatment team and other team members as needed.
- Perform MOUD medication administration, observed dosing, injections, and pill formulations.
- Use sound clinical judgment and advocacy in patient care communication.
- Act as liaison between patients and providers.
- Assess and monitor patients during induction, stabilization, and maintenance phases.
- Provide ongoing medication management for MOUD patients.
- Administer informed consent forms and manage medication dosing.
- Support patients in all treatment phases, including scheduled sick‑call visits, chronic care clinics, random urine toxicology screens, routine labs, medication teaching, monitoring, and pill counts.
- Maintain a non‑judgmental, empathetic, and supportive approach with patients and staff.
- Follow state and federal guidelines, collaborating with licensed prescribers and pharmacy.
- Communicate clearly, concisely, and effectively in writing and orally, complying with departmental policies.
- Obtain medication orders, prescriptions, refills, prior authorizations, and necessary communications with pharmacies and the MOUD team.
- Determine when patients need provider evaluation and urgency.
- Promote continuity of care and schedule urgent appointments as needed.
- Respond to patient sick‑calls promptly.
- Document all sick calls and visits, maintaining accurate notes and progress notes.
- Meet regularly with the Multi‑Disciplinary Team (MDT) to address issues and overcome treatment barriers.
- Promote strict patient confidentiality and privacy rights.
Licensure: Current, unrestricted New Mexico Licensed Practical Nurse License
Certification: Current CPR Certification
Preferred Experience:
- Minimum 2 years of nursing experience
- Experience maintaining documentation
- Correctional experience preferred but not required
