Chavira's in Las Cruces, NM is looking for one butcher/meat cutter to join our 34 person strong team. We are located on 5702 Bataan Memorial E C3. Our ideal candidate is a self‑starter, motivated, and reliable.
Job Title:
Experience Butcher (Must have minimum of 1 year in meat cutting experience)
The Butcher cuts, trims, and prepares meat for use or sale in grocery stores and taqueria.
Responsibilities- Operates meat processing equipment.
- Uses hand tools and power equipment to cut meat to specifications.
- Tenderizes, packages, weighs, labels, and prices meat products.
- Arranges meat products in the display counter to attract the attention of customers.
- Prepares special‑ordered cuts of meat for customers.
- Evaluates quality control and ensures the workspace is kept sanitary.
- Ensures products comply with all U.S. Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) guidelines.
- Receives and stores meat when it is delivered and ensures its quality and freshness.
- Oversees meat inventory and places orders to maintain inventories.
- Notifies the manager of any problems or issues that could affect the quality of meat products sold to customers.
- Meets productivity, accuracy, and quality standards.
- Other duties as assigned.
This position does not oversee staff.

Education/ExperienceAt least three years of experience in meat cutting, packaging, and food handling, preferred. An equivalent combination of education and experience is acceptable.
Required Skills/Abilities- Excellent communication skills and focus on customer service.
- Familiarity with USDA guidelines.
- Ability to operate band saws and other meat‑cutting equipment.
- Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
- Ability to fulfill customer orders efficiently and accurately.
- Good verbal communication skills.
- Ability to work nights and weekends as needed.
Food handlers permit required.
Work EnvironmentThe work is typically performed outside in a grocery store or kitchen setting. The noise level is moderate to loud. Working conditions include exposure to animal carcasses, blood, and other animal fluids. Environmental conditions may include exposure to extreme cold and heat, sharp objects, slippery surfaces, crowded areas, or working near moving parts.
Physical Demands- Prolonged periods of standing.
- Must be able to lift 50 pounds at a time.
- Ability to tolerate a workspace that fluctuates between extreme cold and extreme heat.
- Ability to perform repetitive movements over long periods.
