Position Summary
Provides services for the Juvenile Citation Program in collaboration with other first‑offender programs. Conducts eligibility intake assessments with referred youth and their parent(s), tracks statistical data, provides community referrals, and monitors youth to ensure completion of the program contract.
Position functions 100% in an indoor environment.
Physical and Work Situation FactorsLight physical demands require the ability to lift or carry office files weighing up to ten pounds. Observation of surroundings to identify volatile situations or safety issues is required. The position requires competing demands such as strict deadlines and multiple tasks, with occasional work beyond normal business hours. Extensive interaction with disruptive juveniles and upset parents is expected. Regular attendance is an essential function of the job to ensure continuity of services.
The position is subject to drug testing in accordance with applicable State and Federal regulations and City of Las Cruces policies. Continued employment is contingent upon grant funding.
- Liaison with the juvenile probation administration, other personnel, outside agencies, offenders in the system, and the general public to facilitate client placement and transition in programming.
- Review referrals and interview juveniles eligible for the Juvenile Citation Diversion Programs.
- Staff cases regularly with the Juvenile Diversion Program Supervisor; seek guidance on client–related issues; collaborate with coworkers and partners in decision‑making.
- Research and develop best‑practice behavior and gender‑specific assessments.
- Report project outcomes and measures in accordance with grant agreements; provide monthly reports to the Juvenile Diversion Program Supervisor.
- Update files, maintain records and a database of participant demographics, referrals, and correspondence using a computer.
- Refer youth and families to community resources as necessary.
- Correspond with youth, parents, attorneys, victims, and appropriate agencies; review program files weekly and notify relevant agencies of non‑compliance.
- Record completions, disqualifications, and referrals; notify all agencies in writing.
- Maintain a strictly professional relationship with participants, ensuring strict client confidentiality at all times.
- Prepare and present various special and recurring reports.
Equivalent to two years of college education including courses in criminal justice, social work, psychology, sociology, or a related field, plus six months of experience in the juvenile criminal justice system or a related field and one year of experience screening, interviewing, and assessing at‑risk youth ages 12 to 18. A combination of education, experience, and training may be considered in accordance with City of Las Cruces policy.
Bilingual (English/Spanish) may be required.
Valid driver’s license is required. Position requires an acceptable driving record in accordance with City policy.
Knowledge, Skills, and AbilitiesGood knowledge of: community service programs and agencies, local government, and referral procedures.
Skill in: operating a personal computer with general and specialized office productivity software; conflict resolution.
Ability to: establish and maintain professional relationships with employees, officials, and the public; work effectively, firmly, and impartially with a diverse group of staff and participants; communicate clearly and concisely orally and in writing; analyze and prepare data; adhere to city and state regulations; be self‑motivated and maintain constant alertness. Bilingual (English/Spanish) may be preferred.
