LV Petroleum is a fast‑growing, privately held company headquartered in Las Vegas, operating over 80 travel centers, convenience stores, and quick‑service restaurants nationwide.
As we continue our aggressive expansion, we are seeking a detail‑oriented Tax Compliance Analyst to manage complex sales, use, and excise tax compliance across multiple jurisdictions. This hands‑on role focuses on ensuring accurate and timely tax compliance for fuel sales, convenience store merchandise, prepared foods, and other retail operations in a dynamic multi‑state environment.
Key Responsibilities- Manage end‑to‑end sales, use, and excise tax compliance for LV Petroleum’s growing portfolio of travel centers, gas stations, convenience stores, and restaurants across multiple states
- Prepare, review, and file accurate sales, use, and excise tax returns (including fuel excise taxes) in a timely manner for all required jurisdictions
- Extract and analyze financial data from multiple systems (POS, ERP, fuel management systems) to calculate taxable sales, exemptions, and tax liabilities
- Maintain and update the corporate tax calendar, tracking filing deadlines, regulatory changes, and new jurisdiction requirements driven by company expansion
- Conduct in‑depth tax research on complex issues such as fuel tax exemptions, nexus thresholds, product taxability (e.g., prepared foods, tobacco, alcohol), and multi‑state compliance challenges
- Identify opportunities for tax savings, process efficiencies, and refund claims while ensuring full regulatory compliance
- Support tax audits and inquiries from state revenue departments, providing documentation and responses as needed
- Collaborate with operations, finance, and accounting teams to improve data accuracy and streamline tax‑related processes
- Assist with special tax projects, including integration of newly acquired locations, system implementations, and process improvement initiatives
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Business, or a related field
- 3+ years of hands‑on experience in sales, use, and excise tax compliance (experience in retail, fuel, or hospitality industries is strongly preferred)
- Strong knowledge of sales, use, and excise tax regulations across multiple U.S. jurisdictions, including fuel‑specific excise taxes, dyed diesel rules, and retail taxability nuances
- Proficiency in Microsoft Excel (pivot tables, VLOOKUPs, Power Query) and tax research tools
- Experience with tax compliance, return preparation, financial data analysis, and GL reconciliations
- Ability to research, interpret, and apply state and local tax laws for both compliance and tax optimization opportunities
- Excellent attention to detail, analytical problem‑solving skills, and ability to meet tight deadlines
- Experience with tax automation software (Avalara, Vertex, or similar) is a plus
- CPA or progress toward certification is preferred but not required
