Summary

Camp HOPE – Safe Nest serves youth who have experienced trauma. Camp Counselors should be emotionally prepared to support campers who may share personal experiences, display trauma‑related behaviors, or require additional emotional support. Training and ongoing support will be provided. A Camp Counselor provides direct supervision, guidance, and mentorship to a cabin group of campers, ensuring a safe and supportive camp experience that reflects these character values of honesty, respect, responsibility, and caring.

Camp Counselors build positive, nurturing relationships with campers while supporting a cooperative and inclusive cabin environment. Under the direction of the Unit Director, Camp Counselors assist with the implementation of program activities and daily cabin routines. A Camp Counselor must possess strong communication and interpersonal skills. Counselors must be able to remain calm, attentive, and supportive in an active, fast‑paced environment and work effectively with a diverse group of youth and staff.

Requirements
  • Must be able to pass a Background check, CANS and drug test.
  • Ability to implement age‑appropriate/developmentally appropriate program activities.
  • Previous experience with diverse populations.
  • Ability to develop positive relationships with people from different backgrounds.
  • Must be available to attend all required pre‑camp training sessions to ensure readiness for camp responsibilities. Training dates TBA.
  • Must be available for travel from Las Vegas, NV to Catalina Island, CA for the 2026 Camp HOPE Safe Nest season. Camp dates are from May 25th – 29th.
Preferred
  • CPR, First Aid, and AED certifications.
  • Understanding of trauma‑informed care and ability to support youth who have experienced adversity or violence (training will be provided).
Primary Responsibilities
  • Provide direct supervision and care for campers in assigned cabin group (ages 7–17) at all times.
  • Assist with and participate in activities including music, games, art, swimming, and outdoor recreation.
  • Support implementation of daily cabin routines and scheduled programming.
  • Foster a safe, inclusive cabin environment where all campers feel valued and supported.
  • Serve as a positive role model in behavior, language, respect, and responsibility.
  • Encourage teamwork, cooperation, and healthy peer relationships.
  • Respond to camper emotional needs using trauma‑informed approaches and seek support from Unit Directors when additional assistance is needed.
  • Support campers in developing emotional regulation, problem‑solving, and conflict resolution skills.
  • Check cabin attendance daily and assist with headcounts during transitions and bus travel.
  • Always prioritize camper safety. Campers are never to be left unattended (following rule of
    3).
  • Maintain awareness of camper whereabouts at all times, including transitions, travel, and activities.
  • Assist in maintaining cleanliness and organization of cabins and assigned areas.
  • Ensure equipment and supplies are used appropriately and returned to designated areas.
