Compensation: $2,000.00 stipend

Summary

Camp HOPE – Safe Nest serves youth who have experienced trauma. Camp Unit Directors should be emotionally prepared to support campers who may share personal experiences, display trauma‑related behaviors, or require additional emotional support. Training and ongoing support will be provided.

A Summer Camp Unit Director provides leadership and guidance for a group of campers, ensuring a quality experience to children and parents that focuses on these character values: honesty, respect, responsibility, and caring. A Summer Camp Unit Director creates positive, nurturing relationships with children, while building cooperative relationships with parents/caregivers. Under the direction of the Camp Supervisor, the Summer Camp Unit Director will be responsible for assisting with the planning, development and implementation of program activities.

A Summer Camp Unit Director must possess good communication and organizational skills. A Summer Camp Unit Director must have the ability to maintain control of the area even when distracted by noise or activity, and work with a diverse group of people.

Requirements
  • Must be able to pass a Background check, CANS and drug test.
  • Understanding of trauma‑informed care and ability to support youth who have experienced adversity or violence.
  • Ability to implement age‑appropriate/developmentally appropriate program activities.
  • Previous experience with diverse populations.
  • Ability to develop positive relationships with people from different backgrounds.
  • Must be available to attend all required pre‑camp training sessions to ensure readiness for camp responsibilities. Training dates TBA.
  • Must be available for travel from Las Vegas, NV to Catalina Island, CA for the 2026 Camp HOPE Safe Nest season. Camp dates are from May 25th – 29th.
Preferred
  • CPR, First Aid, and AED certifications.
Primary Activities
  • Supervise activities of children (ages 7‑17), including but not limited to music, games, art, swimming, and outside activities.
  • Plan and implement a progressive camp program, seeing to the total development of the camper mentally, physically, and spiritually.
  • Provide guidance and support to counselors in managing camper behavior and emotional needs, including assisting with de‑escalation and trauma‑informed responses to challenging situations.
  • Provide opportunities for development of awareness in each camper.
  • Provide an enjoyable experience for each camper.
  • Participate in the general planning of the camp program.
  • Set a good example in promptness, manners, language, appearance, and health.
  • Set a good example in respect and care for the facilities and the out‑doors.
  • Create and maintain group unity by making everyone feel a part of the group.
  • Check group attendance each morning and throughout bus travel.
  • Always keep safety of campers in mind. Campers are never to be left unattended (following rule of
    3).
  • Always know whereabouts of the group, including early morning arrivals, bus, camp, trips, etc.
  • Keep all equipment in good operating condition and be responsible for returning items to their proper place.
  • Maintain required program records.
