About the role

The Tradeshow/Scenic Painter is responsible for executing high-quality scenic painting and surface treatments for backdrops, props, and set pieces used in live events, theatrical productions, trade shows, and experiential environments. This role requires a strong eye for detail and a mastery of painting techniques to bring design concepts to life across a variety of formats and materials.

What you'll do
  • Mix paints and match colors to maintain consistency across scenic elements.
  • Apply a wide range of finishes including faux textures (woodgrain, marble, metal, etc.), aging, distressing, murals, and graphic stenciling.
  • Prepare surfaces (priming, sanding, patching) and apply base coats or specialty finishes as needed.
  • Collaborate with designers, carpenters, and production team members to achieve the creative vision across theater sets, event installations, and trade show environments.
  • Ensure durability and quality of finishes for elements that will be transported and assembled on site.
  • Maintain a clean and organized paint workspace, including tools, brushes, and materials.
  • Follow safety protocols for working with ladders, chemicals, and ventilation systems.
  • Assist with onsite touch-ups, repairs, and final detailing during load-in and setup for shows and trade exhibits.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
  • Must have a high school diploma or equivalent.
  • Two (2) years or more of scenic painting experience in theatrical, trade show, film, or live event environments.
  • Portfolio showcasing a range of scenic painting styles and techniques.
  • Proficiency in color theory and ability to replicate finishes from references or verbal direction.
  • Experience working with a variety of paints, sealants, sprayers, and specialty tools.
  • Strong collaboration and communication skills; able to work well in a fast-paced team environment.
  • Physically capable of standing for extended periods, lifting up to 50 lbs, and working at heights on ladders or scaffolding.
  • Flexible schedule with availability for nights, weekends, and extended hours during load-ins or installations.
