Who May Apply:

This posting may be used to fill future vacancies at these locations:
Arkansas Valley, Canon City and Denver, and may also be considered for other locations throughout the state.
- Provide routine and emergency medical care, on‑call assessment, diagnosis, and treatment of inmates in one or more prison clinical settings.
- Conduct medical/physical examinations.
- Order and interpret diagnostic tests and diagnose medical conditions.
- Prescribe medications and treatment.
- Educate patients about preventive health care.
- Ensure minor medical procedures are performed on‑site.
- Accountable for work product of Nurse Practitioners and Physician Assistants; provide clinical supervision, consultation, education, and professional development.
- Provide medical services to a daily patient caseload including chronic care, sick call, emergencies and routine physicals.
- Participate in monthly on‑call schedule and provide on‑site assistance to other DOC clinical units and facilities as needed.
- Provide instruction, demonstration and training to other health care professionals.
- Offer medical advice to other organizational units or specialties through consultation regarding patients or protocols.
- Advise management on the development of medical programs, treatment standards and clinical pathways.
- Ensure compliance with DOC Administrative Regulations, policies and procedures, clinical standards, State statutes and medical directives, including data entry, referrals, consultations, medical reporting and inmate grievance requirements.
- Maintain problem lists and M‑Code ratings in inmates’ health records and apply housing and work restrictions.
- Participate in restraining an inmate primarily for medical reasons as required.
- Attend quarterly Medical Review Board meetings, monthly Physician Round Table meetings and other division meetings.
- Licensed to practice medicine in the State of Colorado as a Medical Doctor (M.D.) or Doctor of Osteopathy (D.O.).
- Board eligible (completed residency) or board certified in one of the following specialties:
Emergency Medicine, Family Medicine, Internal Medicine, Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, or Preventive Medicine.
- Ability to provide direct patient care to inmates.
- Knowledgeable in full‑spectrum primary care.
- Skilled in office‑based procedures.
- Maintain professionalism in a complex environment.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Exceptional interpersonal skills and ability to collaborate with internal and external stakeholders.
- Proficient reading and comprehension of the English language.
- Fluent oral and written communication in English.
- Ability to create accessible documents that follow plain‑language guidelines with accessibility in mind.
- Self‑control, strong sense of ability to work in stressful, potentially violent situations.
- Remain alert, emotionally stable, and mentally resilient under pressure.
- Tolerance to stress, confinement, and high‑stakes interaction.
- Experience providing medical care in a correctional environment.
- Board certified in Family Medicine or Internal Medicine.
- Experience managing chronic medical conditions as a Physician.

Conditions of Employment:- Must be 21 years of age.
- Possess a valid driver’s license—non‑restricted Colorado driver license with acceptable driving record.
- Possess a high school diploma or GED.
- No felony convictions.
- Legally eligible to work in the United States; no visa sponsorship provided.
- Pass all modules of the six‑week Colorado Department of Corrections Basic Training (includes defensive tactics).
