Established locally in 1944, the YMCA of Southern Nevada is one of the region’s longest‑serving and most‑respected nonprofit organizations. We are committed to helping people of all ages, abilities, backgrounds, and income levels – ensuring everyone has the opportunity to reach their full potential with dignity and that no one is turned away due to the inability to pay. From childcare to senior programs;

sports to education; fitness centers to chronic disease management; and swim lessons to feeding the hungry, the Y is truly for all in its cause of holistically strengthening the foundations of this community.

Position Summary

The YMCA of Southern Nevada is looking for an Outdoor Education Coordinator. In this position, you will be responsible for planning, organizing, and delivering high‑quality outdoor education programming for YMCA members. This includes leading the Take‑a‑Hike program (free outdoor excursions for members) and delivering age‑appropriate outdoor education experiences for Summer Camp and Power Scholars participants. You will need to ensure programs are safe, inclusive, educational, and aligned with YMCA values.

This is a part‑time in‑person position requiring 15 hours per week. You will work out of the Heinrich YMCA at 4141 Meadows Lane. Office work will generally be performed during normal business hours, but you will often need to be available to run programs on evenings and weekends.

Responsibilities
  • Plan, organize, and execute Outdoor Education programs, including the Take‑A‑Hike member program.
  • Lead and facilitate outdoor education activities for Summer Camp and Power Scholars participants, aligning lessons with age‑appropriate learning outcomes.
  • Form and nurture partnerships with public and federal land agencies.
  • Develop lesson plans that align with state and national education standards where applicable. Collaborate with Out‑of‑School‑time program leaders to align outcomes and enhance program quality.
  • Ensure all outdoor programs meet YMCA safety standards, risk management policies, and best practices, including while supervising groups of up to 100 children off‑site.
  • Coordinate logistics for hikes and outdoor experiences, including routes, transportation needs, supplies, and participant communication.
  • Maintain accurate program documentation, participation records, evaluations, and reports. Complete reporting for grant‑funded programs when required including NOER and 21st Century.
  • Serve as a positive role model and build meaningful relationships with participants, families, and staff.
  • Collaborate with other YMCA departments to support integrated programming and special events.
  • Assist with the setup, breakdown, and maintenance of program equipment and supplies.
  • Maintain outdoor education curriculum materials and ensure inventory is organized and in good condition.
  • Respond to member and family questions and feedback in a timely, professional manner.
  • Work evenings, weekends, and occasional holidays as program needs require.
  • Perform all other duties as assigned.
Abuse Risk Management Functions
  • Adheres to policies related to boundaries with children.
  • Attends required abuse risk management training.
  • Reports suspicious or inappropriate behaviors and policy violations.
  • Follows mandated abuse reporting requirements.
  • Adheres to job‑specific abuse risk management responsibilities.
  • Follows employees and volunteers screening requirements and uses screening instruments to screen for abuse risk.
  • Reports essential abuse risk management information to their supervisor, executive director, or human resources.
End Results
  • Safe, engaging, and well‑organized outdoor education programs that enhance member and participant experience.
  • Increased participation, satisfaction and knowledge in Take‑a‑Hike and youth outdoor education offerings.
  • Increase retention in YMCA Family Membership.
  • Positive representation of YMCA values and mission through high‑quality outdoor programming.
