Position Summary

The YMCA of Southern Nevada is looking for substitute Teaching Assistants to join our team. As a substitute teaching assistant you will be contacted to pick up shifts on an as needed basis. You will be expected to accept at least two shifts per month. The program runs from 2:45pm-6:00pm, Monday-Thursday. In this position you will assist with implementing the day-to-day programming of the 21st Century Learning Center at partner elementary schools.

This includes assisting with delivering the Bell Xcel program curriculum, as well as providing homework help, academic enrichment, and family engagement events.

About the Program

Research shows that young people from underserved and low-income families often start school underprepared and fall behind their peers as a result, creating an opportunity gap. Through focused programming and support, the Y is committed to closing this gap. The Power Scholars program uses evidence based curriculum and licensed teachers to support students’ educational readiness, engagement and outcomes, and emotional and physical development while also providing after school childcare at no cost to students or families.

Responsibilities
  • Supports the delivery of relevant and engaging lessons in groups of 12 to 24 students
  • Works closely with supervisors and teachers to develop and implement strategies for student success
  • Prepares and organizes program supplies and tracks student attendance
  • Implements classroom and behavior management strategies to consistently develop a safe and productive learning environment
  • Ensures proper implementation of the YMCA of Southern Nevada’s Youth Development policies and procedures
  • Performs all other duties as assigned
Abuse Risk Management Functions
  • Adheres to policies related to boundaries with children.
  • Attends required abuse risk management training.
  • Reports suspicious or inappropriate behaviors and policy violations.
  • Follows mandated abuse reporting requirements.
  • Adheres to job specific abuse risk management responsibilities.
End Result
  • Provide safe, secure and educational programs at the after school site.
  • Impact the overall effectiveness of the association's implementation of the YMCA mission through youth development.
  • Promote a welcoming and inclusive environment for students of all backgrounds, abilities and identities.

Qualifications
  • 1-2 years of experience facilitating out-of-school-time programming, preferably within underserved communities.
  • Bi-lingual in English and Spanish, preferred.
  • Strong interpersonal and organizational skills.
  • Academic skills – proficiency in elementary math and literacy.
  • Commitment to teamwork and collaboration with diverse populations.
  • Ability to build relationships and influence scholars, staff, community members & families.
  • Excellent organizational and communication skills.
  • Love and respect for children.
  • Current American Red Cross Certifications in CPR for the Professional Rescuer and First Aid (within 30 days of hire).
