ROLE of the POSITIONWe are seeking two engaged individuals to serve as full-time academic advisors in the College of Sciences Advising Center. The Center provides academic advising services to over 2500 major, minor, and prospective undergraduate students. The College comprises four departments and one school, offering 10 majors and 7 minors. As an Academic Advisor, you will play a crucial role in supporting students’ academic journey and promoting their success.
The primary responsibility of this role is to provide comprehensive academic advising services to students within the College, with a focus on holistic student care. This position will work closely with the Director and other advising staff to support students’ academic and career goals, ensuring their success and progression from matriculation to beyond graduation.
Key responsibilities:
- Provide academic advising services for major and minor degree programs within the College of Sciences, including the departments of Chemistry and Biochemistry, Physics and Astronomy, Mathematical Sciences, Geoscience, and the School of Life Sciences.
- Conduct advising appointments with current majors, prospective students, and special populations, utilizing various communication channels such as in-person meetings, virtual sessions, email, and group settings.
- Utilize advising experience and philosophy to help students identify their strengths, interests, and abilities, and assist in interpreting how these aspects relate to majors and careers.
- Use excellent interpersonal and communication skills to effectively engage and build rapport with students from diverse backgrounds.
- Collaborate with colleagues in the advising community to support the implementation and execution of the college’s retention, completion, and progression (RPC) initiatives.
- Stay updated on college-specific information and post-graduation goals to provide accurate and relevant guidance to advisees.
- Represent the College in advising, college and university events, as well as participate in professional development opportunities.
- Perform additional duties as assigned by the supervisor.
These positions report to the Associate Director of Advising.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONSThis position requires a Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college or university as recognized by the United States Department of Education and/or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA) and one year of experience related to student success and support. Credentials must be obtained prior to the employment start date.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS- Experience with software programs such as Salesforce (Rebel Success Hub), People Soft (MyUNLV), Google Suite, and Microsoft Office Suite;
- Experience working with and supporting a diverse student population in a high-volume environment;
- Experience working with and supporting STEM students;
- Presentation and content creation experience.
