Position: Literacy Specialist (Nellis)

Literacy Specialist

The Literacy Specialist serves as an instructional leader who supports the development and implementation of high-quality literacy instruction across grade levels. This position collaborates with teachers, administrators, and support staff to improve student literacy outcomes through coaching, intervention support, data analysis, professional development, and evidence-based instructional practices. The Literacy Specialist works to ensure that all students develop strong reading, writing, speaking, and language skills necessary for academic success.

Instructional

Leadership & Coaching
  • Provide instructional coaching and support to teachers in literacy best practices, curriculum implementation, and differentiated instruction.
  • Model effective literacy instructional strategies and co-teach lessons as needed.
  • Support teachers in developing standards-aligned literacy instruction that meets the needs of diverse learners.
  • Assist with the implementation of school-wide literacy initiatives and programs.
Student Achievement & Intervention
  • Analyze student achievement data to identify literacy needs and recommend instructional interventions.
  • Collaborate with teachers to develop targeted support plans for struggling readers and writers.
  • Support Multi-Tiered Systems of Support (MTSS) and Response to Intervention (RTI) processes related to literacy.
  • Monitor student progress and adjust intervention strategies based on data.
Professional Development
  • Design and facilitate professional learning opportunities focused on literacy instruction, assessment, and intervention.
  • Provide ongoing support and feedback to teachers regarding literacy practices.
  • Stay current on research-based literacy instruction and share best practices with staff.
Assessment & Data Analysis
  • Assist in the administration and analysis of literacy assessments and screening tools.
  • Support teachers in interpreting assessment results to drive instructional decision-making.
  • Monitor school-wide literacy performance and identify trends, strengths, and areas for growth.
  • Prepare reports and recommendations related to literacy achievement.
Collaboration & Family Engagement
  • Collaborate with administrators, teachers, interventionists, special education staff, and English learner staff to support student literacy development.
  • Communicate with families regarding literacy resources and strategies to support learning at home.
  • Participate in school improvement planning related to literacy achievement.
Other Duties
  • Attend meetings, professional development activities, and school events as required.
  • Maintain confidentiality of student and staff information.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications

Required:
  • Bachelor's degree in Education or a related field.
  • Valid Nevada teaching license or ability to obtain one.
  • Minimum of three (3) years of successful classroom teaching experience.
  • Demonstrated expertise in literacy instruction and intervention.
  • Knowledge of evidence-based reading and writing practices.
  • Strong data analysis and instructional coaching skills.
Preferred:
  • Master's degree in Reading, Literacy, Curriculum & Instruction, Educational Leadership, or a related field.
  • Reading Specialist endorsement or equivalent certification.
  • Experience coaching teachers and facilitating professional development.
  • Experience with MTSS/RTI frameworks and literacy intervention programs.

Work Environment

The Literacy Specialist works in a school environment with frequent interaction with teachers, students, administrators, and families. The role requires classroom observations, instructional coaching, data analysis, professional development facilitation, and collaboration across departments. Occasional travel between campuses and attendance at after-school events or meetings may be required.
