ROLE of the POSITION

The Department of Sociology at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant Professor. We seek a scholar whose primary expertise includes Social Inequalities and whose research and teaching contribute to Crime, Law, and Deviance. The successful candidate’s qualifications and interests may also complement existing departmental strengths, including:
Urban and Community Life;
Culture, Media, and Identity; and Life Course, Health, and Well-Being. This position will strengthen the department’s expertise in Social Inequalities while contributing to our broader areas of specialization in Crime, Law, and Deviance.

Applicants must demonstrate their ability to conduct independent research with the potential to develop a strong record of scholarship, to obtain extramural funding for research, and to teach at the graduate and undergraduate level. Applicants must also demonstrate awareness of and sensitivity to the educational goals of a multicultural student population through training, teaching, and other comparable experience.

The successful candidate will (a) teach undergraduate and graduate courses in Social Inequalities and Crime, Law, and Deviance; (b) supervise and mentor master’s and doctoral students, (c) contribute to undergraduate and graduate instruction in quantitative and/or qualitative methods; (d) demonstrate a willingness to teach SOC 101, Introduction to Sociology; and (e) pursue extramural research funding. The candidate’s research should address social inequalities and their relationship to crime, law, deviance, and/or social control, with the potential to complement and extend the department’s areas of expertise.

Minimum Qualifications
  • This position requires a Ph.D. in Sociology or a related field from an accredited college or university as recognized by the United States Department of Education and/or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA).
  • ABD candidates will be considered.
  • Credentials must be obtained before the start date.

Candidate must be authorized to work in the United States without sponsorship.
