Position: AIR QUALITY MODELER

Position Overview

The Clark County Department of Environment and Sustainability seeks an Air Quality Modeler within the Planning section. The role supports state implementation planning, periodic EPA reporting, permits/dispersion modeling, and contributes to overall section effectiveness. Air quality modeling, emissions inventory, and meteorological data management are key responsibilities.

Key Responsibilities
  • Plan, organize, and complete air quality modeling for mobile, stationary source, SIP and other activities to meet department needs and deadlines.
  • Perform complex computer modeling, emissions inventory, and database tasks requiring advanced computer skills.
  • Conduct mobile source, other man‑made and natural sources emissions modeling to assist in SIP development.
  • Conduct SIP modeling as needed to demonstrate attainment. Identify data and studies needed to track airshed status for each criteria air pollutant in accordance with federal, state, and local requirements. Inventory and maintain documentation of baseline and incremental consumption for each air pollutant in each airshed.
  • Review and verify data, model use, model runs, and interpretation of modeling results submitted with air permit applications for applicability, reasonableness, anomalies, and approvability based on applicable federal, state, and local requirements.
  • Perform site visits as part of the review and verification process.
  • Determine analytical techniques and data gathering processes and obtain required information for analysis.
  • Analyze and make recommendations regarding policy and procedure development and implementation associated with air quality modeling.
  • Maintain accurate records and files related to the areas of assignment.
  • Prepare a variety of technical, statistical, and narrative reports, correspondence, and other written materials; complete informational surveys; prepare and submit reports to various regulatory agencies.
  • Provide direction, training, and work review to professional and/or technical staff on an air quality modeling project basis.
  • Coordinate and perform research, administrative, and technical activities necessary to achieve project objectives or interpretive mapping results.
  • Drive a motor vehicle to attend meetings and inspect property sites.
  • Assist in the planning and development of departmental and/or divisional internal policies and procedures.
  • Contribute to the efficiency and effectiveness of the unit's service to its customers by offering suggestions and directing or participating as an active member of a work team.
  • May be assigned to coordinate activities for specific projects and/or programs.
  • Conduct various complex research studies; prepare reports and make recommendations.
  • Use standard office equipment, including a computer, in the course of the work.
  • Attend meetings and other departmental functions.
  • Perform special assignments and projects.
Qualifications

Education and Experience: Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with major coursework in engineering, natural or physical science, environmental studies, public/environmental health, or a related field, AND four (4) years of full‑time professional‑level experience in air quality management or a directly related field. Must have computer skills to develop/administer air quality models. Equivalent combination of experience and/or education may be considered.

Licensing and Certification: Valid Nevada Class C driver’s license at time of appointment.

Background Investigation: Employment contingent upon successful completion of a background investigation.

Citizenship: Legally authorized to work in the United States.
